Thomas Aquinas was a 13th century Catholic theologian who sought to synthesize faith and reason. In his major work Summa Theologica, he offers five arguments for God's existence, including the "fifth way" or Argument from Design contained in the assigned reading. The Argument from Design notes that non-intelligent natural bodies like plants and organs work toward ends, requiring an intelligent designer, God. It uses an archer analogy - an arrow moving toward a target needs an archer just as nature needs God. While some object that evolution explains nature, the Argument from Design is compatible with evolution simply explaining how God directs nature toward its goals.
