This document introduces OpenMRS, an open source medical record system that builds local capacity through free and open source software and health IT. It discusses several global implementations of OpenMRS including a mobile tele-psychiatry project in Ghana, Rwanda's national medical record system, an OpenMRS business startup in Chile, and projects with the Millennium Villages Project in multiple countries. It also outlines what is needed to get started with OpenMRS including technical skills as well as motivation, community involvement, and a desire to help underprivileged populations.
