Open Source
in the Era of 5G
All Things Open 2018

Chief OpenStack Architect, VMware
Mark T. Voelker ( @marktvoelker)
• Chief OpenStack Architect @ VMware, Interop Working Group co-chair, OpenStack Foundation
Member #54, Meetup attender/organizer, ex-Puppet OpenStack core dev
• Fact: can be bribed with doughnuts
• In copious (hah!) spare time: OpenStack solutions, Massively Scalable Data Centers, DevOps,
security, distributed systems generally, making sawdust with extreme prejudice, raising two great
kids with my awesome wife just a few miles down the road from here
• Sadly, not a comic book superhero by night…
“A computer nerd….
is somebody who
uses a computer in
order to use a
computer.”
–Douglas Adams

2002: Verizon launches 3G service in the USA in July
2007: The iPhone launches (data rates are horrible…3G
penetration in the US = ~3.5%)
2008: iPhone 3G arrives (now the fun really begins!)
2011: 3G penetration in the US crosses 82%
2014: 4G penetration in the US crosses 40%
2016: Mobile internet usage passes desktop browser access,
cost per MB is now 99.7% less than in 2006
2018: 5G service launches in select markets in the US and
China
What’s Happening
It’s a Whole New World Out There
The worldwide 5G buildout will drive up to $56
billion in annual infrastructure spending by 2020.
4©2018 VMware, Inc.
5G: What’s the Big Deal?
Speeds and Feeds: Not the Whole Story
Throughput: 5G will offer speeds up to 10 Gbps.
Latency: Latency goes from 50ms to 1ms.
Connections: Up to 1 million connections per square kilometer.
So….what do you do with that?
5©2018 VMware, Inc.
5G: Ok, but what’s the big deal for me?
Well that depends….
When I say “the computer you use every day”, what image pops into your head?
Maybe these things?
Sure. And I bet you’re
always looking for
wifi…
6©2018 VMware, Inc.
When I say “the computer you use every day”, what image pops into your head?
Or this?
I don’t even have to
explain this one, do I?
Right, moving on….
7©2018 VMware, Inc.
Maybe even your
watch?
8©2018 VMware, Inc.
Do you think about entertainment?
Music, (superhero!) movies, etc?
I bet most of you get those from connected
streaming devices now….AKA COMPUTERS!
9©2018 VMware, Inc.
Guess what?
Your car is a computer on wheels.
(I literally have an appointment to get mine serviced
next week due to a software bug!)
10©2018 VMware, Inc.
Planes? Connected devices with wings.
AKA
COMPUTERS
(kept in the sky and on time by even
more computers, might I add…….)
11©2018 VMware, Inc.
Yep, even connected refrigerators exist nowadays,
and some of you might have one….or will.
See also: security cameras, doorbells, locks, thermostats, coffee pots, ovens,
smoke alarms, & light switches.
12©2018 VMware, Inc.
Oh, the grid that powers all
those things, too…. power
meters, utility trucks & crews,
sensors, etc.
You can increasingly think of the power grid as a network of computers that
happens to transmit electricity (and has really long cables).
13©2018 VMware, Inc.
Same goes for other utilities like water and gas by the way.
Your bath is powered by a series of
connected computers.
14©2018 VMware, Inc.
NEWS FLASH:
All that?
That’s just TODAY.
Imagine what all of
those things would
look like with
connectivity that was
cheaper, faster, more
ubiquitous, and much
lower latency…
(PS: If you don’t,
somebody else will.)
15©2018 VMware, Inc.
How about low-latency control of critical
systems from where ever you happen to be?
16©2018 VMware, Inc.
Maybe you’d like Augmented
Reality that’s actually real-
time and useful?
17©2018 VMware, Inc.
Vehicle fleets, factory components, and
geo-dispersed systems that can
communicate, self-organize, and self-
optimize production processes?
18©2018 VMware, Inc.
Mobile network
tech traditionally
runs in ~10 year
cycles….
10 years ago we
were just getting
our hands on
the first 3G
iPhone.
Start thinking
less about what
you can do
today & more
about what you
could build
tomorrow.
19
5G Use Cases (a sample)
Speed actually isn’t
the most important
factor for any of
these…it’s the lower
latency, the ubiquity,
and the flexibility we
get by moving to
software.
20Confidential │ ©2018 VMware, Inc.
Sooo…..how we gonna get there?
(those bars we just set are pretty darned high)
21©2018 VMware, Inc.
WE NEED MORE!
More cell sites: small cell and macrocell.
More edge processing: “servers at every
tower” (& buildings, stores, and…)
More orchestration: how are we going to
control all this?
More software & more OPEN SOURCE to
drive consensus, abstraction, unified
interfaces, & speed
But alsoa little LESS…
Less complexity: it has to be “carrier
grade”, but we have to be able to operate it.

“We’ll have two types: those built on NFV,
and those that won’t work.”
--Pat Gelsinger, Mobile World Congress 2017
On projects pushing forward 5G…
23
NFV Objectives
Expensive
• Enterprises delivered with single-
function proprietary hardware
appliances
• Complex integrations and
verification
• Incompatibility across vendor
solutions
Complex Operations
• Installation, Managing and
Maintenance is complex, labor-
intensive and costly
• Moves / Adds / Changes is time
consuming and prone to errors
Lack of Agility
• Service providers can not innovate and
deliver on time to meet real-time
customer requirements
• Roadmaps dictated by vendors
Current Challenges
24©2018 VMware, Inc.
If you’re thinking “that sounds like a lot of clouds and cloud tech….”
You’re absolutely right.
So: we need common API’s for managing infrastructure on demand, regardless of the
underlying hardware, to support virtualized software workloads while reducing cost...
25©2018 VMware, Inc.
The Evolution to 5G
More compute at the edge, more edges to compute at!
Datacenter
(processing happens here)
Processing is more distributed,
at lower latency.
All tied together with an open
source API and control plane.
26©2018 VMware, Inc.
Wait…
You still don’t
know OpenStack?
Ok, really quick primer….

Nova (Compute) Neutron (Networking)

For purposes of today’s talk: think of OpenStack as an abstraction layer that
provides a common API to unite disparate components into powerful open
infrastructure.
Put another way: don’t call your underpinning components individually…
ASSEMBLE them together as a team.
But with so many
individual
sites…and
possibly different
kinds of clouds…
…don’t you still
need a way to
coordinate and
orchestrate it all?

NFV Use Cases

34©2018 VMware, Inc.
This picture is big. But not big enough?
As massive as 5G is, there’s something even more interesting:
If we build in flexibility, if we virtualize, if create
and use great open source, if we can keep a lid
on complexity, we may open the door to a lot of
use cases that haven’t been imagined yet…
And that means we may see the next
generation of telco networks arrive
sooner than we think.
35©2018 VMware, Inc.
No pressure though,
open source
communities!
(Yes, you.)

Make it robust.
Make it play well with others.
Make it less complex.
Whatever
your
project….
Make it carrier grade.
A library.
An operating system.
A web service.
A security appliance.
An orchestrator.
A database.
