OSi’s Role in National Mapping

Maintain and develop the underlying physical
infrastructure of the State which is needed to support
                mapping applications.

We create consistent and homogenous, maintained digital
                         databases.

We provide similar information across the entire country, which
enables government, businesses and individuals, the ability to
create policies, operations and expectations of a countrywide
                             nature.
Location Matters to Government
Important part of State infrastructure adding value to key national
                              projects:

Knowing where something is protects its value & makes possible the
integration of data from different government departments for
              effective planning and decision making.
Location Matters to Citizens
Q: Which of the following would have
a negative impact when making
decisions about where to live?

Archaeology - Hill of Ward
               “Birthplace” of Halloween
• Research by Dr Steve Davis UCD
• Despite the presence of an important 'royal' site at the
hill's summit, the known archaeology of the area
immediately surrounding the hill is sparse. Only two
extra sites have been previously recorded
• It was anticipated that analysis of LiDAR coverage from
the area might bring to light previously unidentified low-
profile archaeological features and so enhance the
archaeological understanding of landscape in the vicinity
  of the hill itself.
   – More archaeology then previously thought.
   – Previous interpretations of the site itself are both corroborated
     and questioned

The industry is changing …. fast
Practically overnight, access to terabytes of geographical
information, much of it in three dimensions, has changed the way
people work, live and entertain themselves.

Prime 2
A new spatial database to meet current
           and future demands
• Industry standard spatial data storage model that allows
digital spatial information to be stored and managed
effectively in relation to the OSi authoritative digital
  reference mapping.
• A database of real world features derived initially from
  multiple current sources.
• Seamless, scale independent, object based spatial data
  management infrastructure.
• The most significant revision to OSi’s data management and

  • 1. An update from your National Mapping Agency Hugh Mangan Head of Marketing & Business Development
  • 2. OSi’s Role in National Mapping Maintain and develop the underlying physical infrastructure of the State which is needed to support mapping applications. We create consistent and homogenous, maintained digital databases. We provide similar information across the entire country, which enables government, businesses and individuals, the ability to create policies, operations and expectations of a countrywide nature.
  • 3. Location Matters to Government Important part of State infrastructure adding value to key national projects: Knowing where something is protects its value & makes possible the integration of data from different government departments for effective planning and decision making.
  • 4. Location Matters to Citizens Q: Which of the following would have a negative impact when making decisions about where to live? % Potential for Flooding 69 High levels of traffic 66 Unfinished housing or ghost 62 estates nearby Industrial sites 62 Lack of amenities 59 Poor transport links 57 High rise buildings in close proximity 55 Poor shopping provisions 52 Hazards (e.g. rivers etc.) 50 (Base: All Adults 16+ – 500)
  • 5. How does our data add value to you? Location as the common link • Better Planning: Water, Sewage, Planning Applications, Roads, Housing, Heritage, Engineering works etc. • Better Citizen Services: Powerful tool for demonstrating and analysing the physical evidence of issues. • Better Resource Optimisation: common referencing framework for all. • Better Decisions: Rapid access to up-to- date information across organisation & public. •Slide 5

  • 19. Archaeology - Hill of Ward “Birthplace” of Halloween • Research by Dr Steve Davis UCD • Despite the presence of an important 'royal' site at the hill's summit, the known archaeology of the area immediately surrounding the hill is sparse. Only two extra sites have been previously recorded • It was anticipated that analysis of LiDAR coverage from the area might bring to light previously unidentified low- profile archaeological features and so enhance the archaeological understanding of landscape in the vicinity of the hill itself. – More archaeology then previously thought. – Previous interpretations of the site itself are both corroborated and questioned

Editor's Notes

  • #3: So what?Maintain & develop the underlying physical infrastructure which is needed to support mapping applications.Technical support to the Chief Boundary Surveyor in performance of his or her duties in delimiting statutory boundaries.Provision of national geodetic infrastructure to enable standardised positioning (Mapping / Height / Measure).Provision of authoritative Geographic Information (GI) reference data.Participation in national programmes (INSPIRE / EPA Land Cover group).Developing a geographic information framework to enable the integration of public sector spatial information (Prime 2).
  • #4: So What?Location affects every part of our lives, OSi are the State body ensuring the value of location to made available to citizens and government alike.
  • #6: So What? Can you see the value that is provided by OSi dataFingal “permeable distance calculation”vs “straight line distance”Transport – wont send a full bin lorry up a steep inclineMobile workers – collection more accurate data in the field.
  • #10: Nearly all Local Authority services are tied to a location.Water ServicesEnvironmental ServicesWaste ServicesFire ServicesHousing PlanningRoadsHeritageRates
  • #27: Background to this initiative
  • #29: Click on a road segment (the “Way Area” layer) – it highlights on the map and a pop-up appears on the map listing the attributes associated with that road segment. At the bottom of the pop-up are links to related data – in this case, the highlighted road segment has related Building Points and Building Areas
