- 13. The literary style of the parable actually places the emphasis on the older son. • The intent of this parable is to address those in the church. We are being challenged in how we respond to those who have strayed.
- 14. The older son was also benefiting from the younger son’s request. In reality the lack of action can be just as wrong as the wrong action. By the older son doing nothing, he was actually committing a wrong just like the younger son was committing a wrong by doing something. A term for this is the sin of omission. We can be sinning against God by refusing to do what we know we should do.
- 15. This text shows us that we are to be in active partnership with God.
- 16. We believe we are entitled to something extraordinary because we never strayed from the church (or have been in it for a long time), we have worked like a slave for the church, and we have never disobeyed the teachings of the church. In essence, the older son probably wanted justice for his younger brother.
- 17. What we see is the older son was focused on the works he did for the father rather than his relationship with him. Just like we have received grace, we must also give grace. By accepting grace for ourselves, we must also accept that God bestows grace on others.
