Economics and cooperation: there is communication? Open ended Wiki_manual, written real time by activists, citizens, economists, journalists, professors, students, trade unionists, professors, … Monica Di Sisto, vicepresidente [fair]
November 27th 2010… … @ Luiss university more than 50 experts participated to a seminar with active modalities of working together: to understand together origins and dimensions of the global crisis to analyze the media approach to it to tell the success stories about alternatives and the resistence to the failure of old model of development which controbute to generate it to study how they’re communicated To learn by journalists and experts if they’re telling those kind of stories and how make them know better
An open map, a cooperative approach
Outcome: a wiki-manual, an open ended map, drafted by… Antonio Amendola (Shoot 4 change), Paola Amicucci (Mondo Solidale), Gianfranco Astori (Agenzia Asca), Leonardo Becchetti (Università Roma 3), Marta Bonafoni (Radio popolare), Giampaolo Cadalanu (Repubblica), Patrizia Caiffa (Agenzia Sir), Simonetta Cossu (Liberazione), Umberto De Giovannangeli (L’Unità), Santo Della Volpe (Rai 3), Carlo Di Cicco (Osservatore Romano), Maurizio Di Schino (Tv 2000), Elisa Marincola (Rainews 24), Gaetano Liardo (Libera informazione), Massimo Razzi (repubblica.it), Eugenia Romanelli (Il Fatto quotidiano), Michele Sorice (Università Luiss), Alessandra Tarquini (Campagna Obiettivi del Millennio)
The economy that changed politics Whole countries are in crisis because of financial flows too large for the size of the real economy, who took excessive risks. In all European countries, the reaction is always the same: cut public goods and services, levels of taxation on consumption and labor too high to be stimulated. The asymmetry between responsibility and burden is not just an issue of social equity that is likely to become increasingly a problem of keeping the social cohesion itself, but is part of the lack of solution
The crisis that changed the economy The fundamental question in the refined minds of economists and political scientists should not to be the thing to do but why you have not yet done The answer is the lack of balance of power in global society. We must work for a grand coalition oriented to the real economy in which large amounts of money that move financial markets contribute to tax equity and generate resources for development. And is in this direction that all our energies should be addressed in the near future before it's too late
The role of the media Much has been written about the phenomenon of the spectacularization of politics and economy, which seems to be inherent to the media (particularly but not exclusively, television). In other words, there is a shifting from agency to representation. If representation becomes more prominent than agency (which means the weakening of public intervention, common interests, social projects, local plans, and so on) politics loses its role of social mediation; so if MPs - as it happens with the current Italian electoral law - are not chosen by the citizens it provokes a disconnection between institutions and citizens.
The role of media /2 It brings together three different social processes: a) the development of mass culture, whose highest expression what comes from the media representation: popular culture obtains legitimacy and even social‚ discursiveness b) the tendency to overlap social functions of the political actors with their personal characteristics. It is clear that this process has been greatly enhanced with the arrival of the modern media, which have produced a multiplication and acceleration of these trends; c) the process of individualization is the phenomenon that is interwined with the development of media and polling, in which individuals have become prominent in comparison to the weakening of political parties.
The alternatives? Concrete answers to be made known The alternatives that come from communities, social movements, trade unions and individual behavior change, however, are offering concrete solutions in organization, production and consumption at the political, cultural and practical level that indicate a more democratic, participatory, sustainable (and possible) future The mainstream media are finding it and showing it to the general public and policy makers, largely thanks to new professionals, also empowered by new technologies
Some media have reported the crisis with this perspective The first stage of comparison with the professionals covered the story of the economic, social, cultural crisis,. We started asking a question: How did they do? Three of the many examples given: The story of an Italian tomatoes in Ghana:Giampaolo Cadalanu (Repubblica) has told that he used the tomato symbol to tell the complex story of dumping in agriculture, thanks to the indications provided by FAO expert How to understand the other side of war? The online diary of Alberto Cairo. The football field “April 25” in Rome’ suburbia is a pitch where from Pasolini to Totti used to play. It was used by Shoot 4 Change as a scenario to tell the overall crisis that has brought all the players of "Liberi Nantes", a team of young immigrants in, Italy after daring and dangerous voyages. The format is “chatting on the bench” .
Social movements and experiences which changes the face of crisis "To find truth one must go in the direction of beauty", is the suggestion given by a Japan monk (Maurizio Di Schino, TV 2000) He found beauty in Nuevo Laredo, @ the borders between Mexico and the United States, where he met a Catholic network of shelters for migrants along the electrified wall that throws unwanted people in Mexico in chains. Very often people is exploited for months then returned to the U.S. police. Many of these women know that they will suffer rapes: theyleave their homes "prepared", taking birth control, but the welcome oasis of hope seek not only to heal their physical wounds, but certainly to help them regain their dignity as women or to reunite them to their families
The hard fight to resist For Patrizia Caiffa (Sir), the fight against the crisis has the face of Mary Magdalene, indigenous tulupan that fight because the natives retain ownership of their land expropriated by multinational corporation of cement. Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, 68, archbishop of Tegucigalpa in Honduras have denounced many times the inertia of public powers against these criminal acts. She escaped in 2007 when commandos have exterminated 8 members of his family to convince her to give away his land. Last year, two weeks before the seminar, they had also killed their eldest son of 23 years, his girlfriend and his cousin. Mary Magdalene is a symbol of what it means speculation Simonetta Cossu (Liberazione) cited the story of Aruna Roy, an indian female leader who attended the to Sonia Gandhi's Committee for the program without ever entering the government. His strength and ability to be in the political process while maintaining its critical independence from the power structures, make her earn, among other things, a constraint on the minimum wage in the state of Rajasthan after 46 days of strike .
