A PTC involves inserting a needle through the liver and into the bile ducts under fluoroscopy to inject contrast media and examine the biliary ducts for abnormalities or blockages. It is used for patients with obstructive jaundice suspected to be caused by gallstones or strictures to potentially remove stones or drain the bile ducts. Patients must not eat or drink before the exam and the radiologist must have equipment like fluoroscopy, needles, and contrast media.
