The pancreas is a dual gland that has both exocrine and endocrine functions. The exocrine part makes up 98% of the pancreas and secretes enzymes to help digest food. The endocrine part is clustered in regions called islets of Langerhans and makes up the remaining 2%. The islets contain four main cell types that secrete important hormones - alpha cells secrete glucagon, beta cells secrete insulin, delta cells secrete somatostatin, and F cells secrete pancreatic polypeptide. Insulin regulates blood sugar levels by facilitating the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream and its storage.
