The word bread is used figuratively in
such expressions as:
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life. He that
cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth in me
            shall never thirst.
(New Testament - Bible, St John, 6:35)

“There are people in the world so hungry, that God
cannot appear to them except in the form of bread”
                                              (Gandhi)

“Without bread and wine love goes hungry.”
                   (Latin Proverb)
Interesting Facts & Art
 In USA, november is National Bread Month.
 In Britain, the ceremony of First Footing is in
the early hours of New Year's Day. A piece of
bread is left outside a door, with a piece of coal
and a silver coin, and is supposed to bring you
food, warmth and riches in the year ahead.
 In Russia, bread (and salt) are symbols of
welcome.
 Scandinavian traditions hold that if a boy and
girl eat from the same loaf of bread, they are
bound to fall in love.

 Museums of Bread:
Museum of Bread (St. Petersburg, Russian)
   Museu Do Pao (Seia, Portugal)
   Brot Museum (Ulm, Germany)
Some Superstitions
 If you burn bread it means your sweetheart is
            angry with you.
 To prevent ghosts from calling, leave bread and
            coffee under a house.
 If all the bread is eaten, the next day will be
            good.
 If you put a piece of bread in a baby's cradle, it
            will keep away disease.
 When a couple is walking down the street
holding hands and an obstacle comes between
them, say "bread and butter" to keep the union
            until the hands meet again.
 A loaf of bread should never be turned upside
down after a slice has been cut from it.
However, there is a problem
                    • Bread industry has a bad track
record on waste, second only to
                    lettuce and fresh apples.

                    • British households throw away
4.4 million ton of food a year. B
read is the most wasted provision of
   BREAD all.
   WASTE
                    • Worldwide, bread & cereal
                    products thrown away in
                    households alone would have
been enough to lift 30 million of
the world's hungry people out of
                    malnourishment
Our food waste is a global issue

 Around 35 million tons of food waste was
generated, in 2010.

 Wasted food means wasted money for businesses
and residences.

 Food decomposes in landfills to generate methane,
a potential greenhouse gas.
