Inspire, Innovate, Transform Education Other Recommendations Forge strong ties with OER, operationalized by MIT Forge strong ties and coordinate with Prof. Krishna Vedula for joint activities on teacher training and workshops of NPTEL. Identify local champions in every region of the globe and every city in India who can spend a couple of hours a week as a volunteer and as advisor to us on bridging the gap between what IIT can offer and what colleges can take. Identify suitable technology for building interactive online for courses created under NPTEL or contents displayed by MIT so that learners access authentic course materials. Suggest simple project proposals that students can do in their undergraduate studies as part of their academic programme Identify leading industrial experts from our Alumni first and also from others who can give 2-5 lectures on case studies that add valuable supplement to NPTEL courses. Please suggest star candidates so that IITM can work to have their lecture recorded and disseminated along with NPTEL videos. Identify willing faculty members who are teaching elsewhere to offer copyright-free contents to the NPTEL repository of their classroom lecture notes and question banks. IITs can offer to be their hosts for this purpose when they visit India.

Disseminate correct information: Ensure correct picture of infrastructure requirements in various sectors is projected to all stakeholders of the infrastructure sector Provide inputs for policy making Ensure that the Government solicits views of IIT community in matters of policy on infrastructure Accelerate knowledge building: Create a cadre of informed and capable specialists in the country in infrastructure sector– targeting students, professionals in industry, and government officials Enable benchmarking: Regularly communicate to all stakeholders of the infrastructure sector, the best practices and achievements worldwide in Infrastructure development Improve technology: Elevate the level and quantum of research and development in IITs to improve materials, technology application, and business processes in infrastructure development

Academic curriculum design: Provide inputs to each IIT on approaches to refine/overhaul academic content for various disciplines and for various programmes (including Executive education) Policy advocacy: Ensure that PANIIT views wrt infrastructure are solicited by policy makers, industry and media. Start by publishing views in a monthly newsletter, becoming members of industry associations (CII, Assocham etc). Inputs for research programmes: Provide periodic inputs to various IITs in terms of what R&D can be done in various areas of infrastructure. E.g. low cost building materials, crashing project construction schedules, carbon sequestration etc.

Set up a PAN IIT Infrastructure Group (PIIG): The PIIG would be a virtual group under the PANIIT banner where members would be from the IIT community. The chairperson of this group could be (s)elected for 1-2 year terms Create a database of IITians: Create a constantly updated database of IITians who have something to do with the Infrastructure sector. The database should also capture how each person can help. Become member of Industry Associations: PIIG should become an active member of organisations such as CII, Assocham, FICCI Interaction with Government (Central/State): PIIG should continuously interact with various ministries that deal with Infrastructure (Power, Oil &Gas, Coal & Mines, Roads & Highways, Transport, Planning Commission, etc) and generate meaningful linkages between research undertaken at the IITs, thought-leadership from alumni in the industry and practical issues faced in the sector Memberships of international research groups: PIIG should be a member of international research groups in infrastructure or collaborate with universities that focus on infrastructure research

Advocate with decision makers at IIT to mainstream rural transformation in the curriculum Help put together database of all NGOs in the country Help put together database of IITians in the Govt Play the role of a body to get across to the Govt / Establishment on real technology needs at the grassroot level and ways and means of better outreach

Help IITians in industry tie-up with NGOs/local governments (e.g. TCS willing to tie-up with local Panchayat for functional literacy programme) Convene meeting with IITians in government and civil society organisation to draw up concrete plan of action Be an enabler for promoting replication of successful ventures in rural transformation in other locations (e.g. taking the SELCO model in Karnataka to other States) Motivate each IIT to take up a cluster of villages near it for transformation. These should serve as models in technology use for sustainable development and better quality of life Get IITians working in the area of rural transformation address current students at IITs periodically to sensitize the student community on the reality in rural India and needs on the ground

Serve as a platform for an active Govt-Corporate-Civil Society network Promote NGO-IIT collaboration (NGO based on field needs will pose technology issues demanding solution, can provide the ground for testing and dissemination on development)
- 17. Inspire, Innovate, Transform Innovation (in Entrepreneurship) 1. What can PAN IIT Do? To enable selected innovations to be transformed into entrepreneurial outcomes. To promote innovative thinking and build capacity among selected Target Groups in India: Students in IITs, higher technical and general education institutions, and other institutions across all levels of the education system. Faculty and Teachers. Industry Professionals. Entrepreneurs. Administrators and Staff in Government and NGOs. Highlight and celebrate entrepreneurial successes. Influence the IIT system to create “space” for students to exercise creativity. Advocate for provision of “study breaks” for students as a part of the academic system. Ensure that IIT-based innovations have the maximum relevance and impact on the external world.
- 18. Inspire, Innovate, Transform Innovation (in Entrepreneurship) 2. How must PAN IIT Execute? Establish an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Steering Group with start-up funds for office and initial activities (a few listed below; others to be identified through Brainstorming). Create and sustain a web portal and blog space to support the above. Commission the production of an “Entrepreneurs from the IITs” series in print and electronic forms. Commission the production of an “Innovations from the IITs” series in print and electronic forms. Conduct Innovation and Entrepreneurship workshops and business fairs in the IITs. Host and conduct Brainstorming sessions across the IITs to identify alternatives for the accomplishment of the above. Offer direct and on-line interactive mentorship sessions through the portal. Highlight innovation possibilities to students through case studies, discussion forums, brainstorming sessions, etc. Understand the basic needs that must be fulfilled by creating the innovation ecosystem. Design an innovation ecosystem by examining and collating existing initiatives/efforts/entities in each IIT related to innovation.
- 19. Inspire, Innovate, Transform Innovation (in Entrepreneurship) 3. How do we collaborate ? Activate Pan IIT-IIT-X collaborations for comprehensive interactions across a whole variety of agenda items. Establish mechanisms for collaboration among innovators, students and the academic system. Enable collaboration among alumni networks, other entities and networks, institutional partners, etc., for implementing the designed ecosystem. In short, begin the move from meetings and Conferences to organization and action.

Inspire, Innovate, Transform Entrepreneurship Leverage alumni network to encourage entrepreneurship at the grass roots level, both, through time and monetary resources primarily through Reach4India effort. Garner support from delegates of PanIIT 2008 for the Reach4India initiative – for mentoring, guiding/leading and even starting franchisees. This PanIIT 2008 conference already received a total support pledged by 330 delegates: 230 weeks of time through sabbaticals (from 68 delegates) 165 delegates’ mentoring support, primarily on weekends 59 delegates’ monetary investment of Rs. 1.03 Cr to become franchisees themselves 40 delegates’ willingness to lead the Reach4India initiative PanIIT, Reach4India to work together on tapping support from alumni through various means(PanIIT conferences, direct marketing efforts, etc) to support and encourage grass roots entrepreneurship BUILDING ENTRTEPRENEURSHIP AT THE GRASSROOTS LEVEL: - CHAMPION HARI PADMANABHAN
- 21. Inspire, Innovate, Transform Entrepreneurship Mentor and guidance for IITian lead businesses that are already in a growth stage to come national / global leaders. Please note the focus here is not on early stage and start-ups. Involve highly successful alumni entrepreneurs in an initiative to form a mentor group focused on supporting entrepreneurs ‘scale up’ to serving the global market.
