- 6. 2. Using Restrictions! Restrictions can modify the iPad facilitating parental control for younger users.! 1. Tap to open Settings! 2. Tap General. Find Restrictions. Tap to turn Restrictions ON.! !!!!!!!!!!!!! 3. Enter a passcode to enable Restrictions. Re-enter the Restrictions Passcode. ! Note: This passcode should be different from the Lock screen passcode (see Section 1. Setting a Passcode Lock) as this password should never be communicated to your child. ! IMPORTANT: Keep a record of the passcode. If you ever forget this passcode, the iPad must be restored to factory settings to regain access to Restrictions.! !!! - 7. 4. Various system functions can be restricted by turning access off here. ! Students will require access to Safari, Camera and Bookstore for classroom activities. ! Parents may choose to block access to Safari (the iPad’s internet browser) during unsupervised use of the iPad at home. ! !!!!! Note: Withholding the Apple ID password from your child will not prevent them from downloading free apps. A password is not required unless the app incurs a cost.! ! 5. Allowed Content should also be restricted to prevent the browsing and previewing of inappropriate content in iTunes. Tap Ratings For and select Australia from the list of countries.! !! - 9. 10. Apps can also be age restricted but we advise against this measure. Apps which allow internet access are rated 17+ by default, yet some of these apps are required for school use (such as SMART Notebook). Students’ online safety can be promoted by appropriate supervision and through other measures. Note: If age restrictions are applied to apps, higher rated apps already installed will disappear from the iPad. If this restriction is later removed, the apps will reappear on your iPad and will not required reinstallation. Return to Restrictions. ! !! 11. In-App Purchases can be set to OFF. This prevents purchases of upgrades and extras from within apps. ! ! ! Note: This restriction is not required if the Apple ID password is withheld from the student user as a password is required for in-app purchases.! ! - 10. 3. Configuring Email! Add an email account to your iPad’s mail app to send and receive mail.! 1. Tap to open Settings.! 2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Tap Add Account...! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2. Tap to select the type of email account. ! Note: The students have email accounts provided by BCE. These accounts are to be set up via the Exchange option here.! ! - 11. 3. Your child’s BCE email address as supplied by the school (e.g. msmith9@mybce.catholic.edu.au) should be entered here. ! 4. Enter the password. ! 5. Then enter ‘School email’ into the description field. Tap Next. Tap Save.! Note: Please be aware, if you have more than one email account set up on the iPad (eg your child’s BCE student account and a home email account), ALL email from all accounts will be visible and accessible by your child at any time. The school recommends restricting students’ email accounts to BCE mail only.! An iCloud email account may be listed but the ‘mail’ option for this account should be set to OFF. To do this, return to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Under the Accounts list, tap iCloud. Switch Mail to OFF.! - 12. 4. Creating an Apple ID without credit or iTunes card.! Note: Apple's Terms and Conditions state that users must be 13 years of age or older to own an Apple ID. This means that prior to 13 years of age, the Apple ID associated with a student’s iPad is the parents'/guardians' Apple ID for that device, not the student's. Consequently, we ask parents/guardians of children under the age of 13 to create and manage their child's Apple ID. Parents can decide whether to continue to manage their child's Apple ID once he/she turns 13 years of age.! This information was correct as at 1/09/2014. Whilst the US has enabled those under 13 to have accounts, this has not yet been applied to the Australian store.! You can create an Apple ID in a number of ways: using iTunes on your computer, via the Apple website or on your iPad using Settings > iTunes and App Stores. The only way to create an Apple ID without a credit card or iTunes card is during installation of an app on the iPad, using the App Store app.! ! 1. Ensure that the iPad is not already signed in under an Apple ID. Tap to open Settings.! !! 2. Select iTunes and App Stores. The screen should appear like this:! !! If the iPad is already signed in to an Apple ID, tap the ID name and select Sign Out.! !!!!!!! ! 3. Return to the Home screen (click the Home button or use a 5-finger ‘scrunch’ gesture on the screen). ! 4. Tap to open App Store. ! !!! 5. Search for one of the requisite free apps such as Google (see Section 6. Using the App Store). ! - 14. 9. Scroll to read Terms and Conditions. Tap twice to Agree.! !!!!!!!!!! 10. Complete the forms, tapping Next at the bottom of each screen. ! Use your child’s BCE Email address for the Apple ID. This email will be used to send school app codes for redemption. ! !!!! Note: Please keep a careful record of the security questions and answers. These will be required when you use the Apple ID on any new device. Answers are case sensitive.! !!! 11. Under Billing Information, select None. This is also where you would enter the code from an iTunes card if you wanted to add account credit this way. The app will now install. You will remain signed into the App Store with this account. The Apple ID password will be required each time paid apps are installed.! Note: You will only be able to install free apps and use redemption codes if you don’t provide a payment method. This option is perfectly fine for school use as all apps are either free or provided via redemption codes. - 15. 5. Signing in to the App Store! Add your account details to use the App Store app.! 1. Tap to open Settings.! !! 2. Scroll down and tap iTunes & App Stores.! !! 3. Enter your Apple ID and Password. ! ! 4. Tap the Done key on the keyboard, or tap Sign In. ! ! 5. Turn Updates ON to receive automatic app updates as they are available.! ! Note: We recommend that parents retain sole access to the Apple ID password and do not give this password to the students.! If you turn on Automatic Downloads for Music, Apps or Books, each new purchase made on your computer, iPhone or other enabled device will automatically install onto the iPad when it is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. ! If your child has an exclusive Apple ID (as recommended by the school) then this feature will enable you to make app purchases or downloads on their behalf. New apps or books will install automatically when these options are turned ON.! ! - 16. 6. An Apple ID password is required for App purchases and downloads. If your Apple ID password kept is secure and uncompromised, you can leave iTunes and App Stores signed in. ! ! If you ever needed to sign out of the App Store, tap the Apple ID at the top of the screen. ! When the pop up box appears, tap Sign Out. - 17. 6. Using the App Store! Use the App Store app to find, download and install apps and update your purchases. ! 1. Tap to open App Store.! !! 2. Locate the “Search” bar in the upper right corner of the screen. Tap inside the bar and type what you’re looking for. As you type, you will see a list of autocomplete suggestions. Choose one of these, or continue to type and tap Search on the keyboard. Several app options will appear. ! !! 3. To refine your search, use one of the filters located in the top bar of the page. You can also choose between iPad and iPhone specific apps.! !!! - 18. 4. Tapping to select an app in the search results opens the detail view in a pop-up window. Here you can read a description of the app, see screenshots from the app and view details about the version, size, rating etc. ! !!!!!!!!! Scroll down and tap In-App Purchases to check details. In-App Purchases may be tempting or distracting for young users. ! !!! Reviews are found in the second tab. Click to read reviews and star ratings from users. ! Tapping the "Related" tab shows a list of apps by the same developer, or other apps that users have purchased. ! !!! 5. You can browse Featured or Top Charting Apps using the tabs at the bottom of the App Store screen. Near Me shows apps that are popular near your current location. ! - 19. 6. When looking at Top Charting apps, use the Categories button on the top left to refine your search. ! Note: Many useful school apps can be found outside the Education category, in Business or Productivity.! !!!!!! 7. The Purchased tab allows you to search apps already owned by the Apple ID account. ! The OPEN button indicates apps that are already installed on the device.! Use the Not on This iPad button to display only those apps that are owned by the account but not installed on this device. ! The iCloud symbol denotes an app that is owned by the account but not installed on this iPad. Tap it to download the app. ! !!! 8. Keep your apps up to date by installing the latest version at the Updates tab. You can update all apps in the list by tapping the Update All button at the top left. ! OR... Update selected apps one at a time by tapping the Update button next to each app (on the right).! It’s a good idea to update apps regularly. Turn on Automatic App Updates in Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads to have updates install automatically. - 20. 7. Redeeming your App Activation Codes! With Apple’s new Volume Purchasing Plan (VPP), educational institutions can save 50% on app license costs, when 20 or more licenses are purchased in a single transaction (for those apps that have been made available via VPP). So these savings can be passed on to families, St Catherine’s will purchase required school apps on behalf of families. Once these purchases have been finalised (early in 2014), app redemption codes will be emailed to students’ email addresses.! Follow these steps to redeem school apps once you have the codes.! 1. Tap to open App Store.! !! 2. Ensure the Featured tab is selected.! !!!!!!!!! 3. Scroll to the very bottom of the screen. If you are not signed in to the App Store, tap Sign In. If the Apple ID that appears here is not your child’s school Apple ID then click the Apple ID and select Sign Out.! !!!!!!! - 21. 4. Tap to sign in with an existing Apple ID. ! !!!!! 5. Enter your child’s school Apple ID (this will be your child’s school “myBCE” email address) and password when prompted. Click OK.! ! Now that the App Store is signed in to the correct Apple ID (your child’s school Apple ID), you may return to the “App Code” email (to be sent early in the 2014 school year). Tap the hyperlink for each App that will be contained in the email. Each apps will automatically install.! ! 6. If you wish to install an app from a redemption code (apps can be ‘gifted’ with redemption codes), tap the Redeem button.! !!! 7. Tap to enter the code manually. ! Note: An app redemption code is a long string of letters and numbers. Redemption codes are case sensitive and must be entered precisely as they are printed.! !!!!!! - 22. ! 8. Looking After Your iPad Battery! These tips are adapted from the Apple website: http://www.apple.com/au/batteries/ipad.html ! ! These commonsense pointers will increase your iPad battery lifespan.! Note: Battery life means the length of time your iPad will run for before it must be recharged. Battery lifespan means the total amount of time your battery will last before it may need to be replaced. Battery lifespan is based on the number of charge/discharge cycles your battery is capable of to retain more than 80 per cent of its original capacity.! 1. Keep it ‘cool’! The most important thing is to keep your iPad out of the sun or a hot car. Never leave it locked up in your car or glove box. Heat will degrade your battery’s performance more than any other factor. The iPad is designed to work in conditions ranging from 0° to 35° C but keeping your iPad as near to room temperature as possible (22° C) is ideal.! 2. Update to the Latest Software! Always make sure your iPad has the latest software. Apple engineers may find new ways to optimise battery performance. Update your iPad to the latest version of iOS. On your iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the latest software.! There are also a number of iPad settings you can adjust to minimise power ! consumption and help extend battery life. ! 3. Adjust brightness! Managing the screen brightness is the best way to extend iPad battery life. By default, your iPad has Auto-Brightness turned on. Auto-Brightness adjusts iPad screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions; lowering brightness in low light conditions helps to extend battery life. You can adjust brightness yourself: go to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper and drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness.! 4. Lock your iPad! It may seem obvious, but you should lock your iPad when you aren’t using it. To lock the iPad, press the Sleep/Wake button on the top right hand edge. You can also set the Auto-Lock interval so your iPad will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity. To set Auto-Lock, go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and set the interval to a short time, such as one minute.! 5. Turn off Wi-Fi! This is not always convenient but if you know you’re not going to be using Wi-Fi, you can turn it off to save power. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and set Wi-Fi to off. Note that if you have an iPad with cellular capability (3G) and use it to browse the web, battery life may be improved by using Wi-Fi instead of cellular data networks.! 6. Minimise use of location services! - 23. Applications that actively use location services, such as Maps, may reduce battery life. To disable location services, go to Settings > General > Location Services, or use location services only when needed.! 7. Turn off push notifications! Some applications from the App Store use the Apple Push Notification service to alert you to new data. Applications that rely extensively on push notifications may decrease battery life. To disable push notifications, go to Settings > Notifications, and set Notifications to off. Note that this does not prevent new data from being received when the application is opened. Also, the Notifications setting will not be visible if you do not have any applications installed that support push notifications.! 8. Fetch new data less frequently! Applications such as Mail can be set to fetch data wirelessly at specific intervals. The more frequently email or other data is fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To fetch new data manually, from the Home screen choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data, and tap Manually. To increase the fetch interval, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and tap Hourly. Note that this is a global setting and applies to all applications that do not support push services.! 9. Turn off push mail! If you have a push mail account such as Yahoo! or Microsoft Exchange, turn off push when you don’t need it. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and set Push to OFF. Messages sent to your push email accounts will now be received on your phone based on the global Fetch setting rather than as they arrive. If the global Fetch setting is set to Manually, you will not be able to locate your iPad using the Find My iPad feature.! 10. Auto-check fewer email accounts! You can save power by checking fewer email accounts. This can be accomplished by turning off an email account or by deleting it. To turn off an account, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, choose an email account, and set Account to Off. To remove an account, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, choose an email account, and tap Delete Account.! 11. Manage the use of downloaded applications! Use of certain applications — such as games that prevent the screen from dimming or shutting off, or applications that use location services — can reduce battery life.! 12. Use Your iPad Regularly! For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100 % and then completely running it down).! ! - 24. 9. iOS7 ~ Tips, Tricks and Troubleshoots! Here are a few more helpful hints to help you get the most out of your iPad. ! 1. Take an iPad screenshot! You can take a screenshot on your iPad by simultaneously pressing the Home and the Sleep/Wake button. The screen will flash and you'll hear a click (if the volume is turned up), indicating that a photo has been taken. Your screen shots are saved automatically to your Photo gallery. Here, you can view or email them as you see fit. ! 2. Turn iPad caps lock on! To type a capital letter on the onscreen keyboard you first tap the left or right shift key, then the letter. If you need to type a whole word in caps this can be painful. Save time typing in caps by turning the caps lock on. To do this double tap on either shift key. The shift keys will turn a dark grey colour when caps lock is on.! 3. How to type faster with multiple spaces! Instead of typing a full stop at the end of each sentence, followed by a space, you can double-tap the space bar, or tap once with two fingers, to get the same result. The iPad soft keyboard doesn't have a Tab key, but you can tap the space bar with three fingers at the same time to get three spaces, or four fingers to get four spaces. It works for five spaces too if you put five fingers together to press the space bar.! 4. Copy and paste! You can quickly copy and paste text by tapping and holding down, and then choosing Select. Use the blue markers to select the exact portion of text you'd like to copy. Next tap Copy, then go to a different place or even a different app. Tap and hold down again, then tap Paste from the menu that appears. To select an entire paragraph of text, tap four times.! 5. How to undo and redo by “shaking”! - 25. When you accidentally cut away some text and need to undo your last action using such apps as Mail or Notes, you can tap the Undo key on the Number keyboard. To redo, switch to the Symbol keyboard, then tap the Redo key. As an alternative, you can also shake your device to undo and redo. After deleting some text, hold your iPad firmly with your both hands and give it a quick shake, and the Undo button (like the screenshot) slides in for you to undo. To redo, shake it again, but don't drop your iPad!! 6. Stop the clicking keyboard! The clicking sound you hear each time you tap a key on the iPad’s keyboard can become annoying and could be an unwelcome distraction in the classroom. To disable that sound, got to Settings > General > Sounds. Slide the Keyboard Clicks option to OFF.! 7. How to split, merge, dock and undock the keyboard! If you're holding your iPad with both hands you can split and undock the keyboard to make it easier to thumb type either in a portrait or landscape view. Touch and hold the "Keyboard" key (bottom right of the keyboard), choose an option to split or undock a keyboard, and do the same to merge or dock it. Or use your two thumbs to unpinch the keyboard to split it, and pinch to merge it.! ! - 26. 8. Create folders! You may wish to organise your apps into folders. To create a folder, tap and hold on an app until they all start to wobble, then drag the app icon over another app icon and release. Your iPad will create a folder with both the apps inside. The folder will be named according to the category of the apps it contains, but you can rename it as you like.! ! 9. Restrict your Spotlight searches! Swipe down on any screen to reveal the Spotlight search. By default it searches everything including songs, podcasts, email, apps and events. ! To restrict the areas it searches, since you may not want all these categories included, look in Settings > General > Spotlight Search.! 10. Access all running apps! When running an app, you can minimize it by clicking the Home button. Double-clicking the Home button shows you all the apps that are running on your iPad in a bar across the screen (screen thumbnails above and corresponding app icons below). To switch to a running app just swipe until you find the app you want and tap on it here. ! To close (Quit) an app, drag its thumbnail image upwards and let it go. When it disappears from this list, the app is closed. Sometimes if an app is locked up or not running correctly, ‘quitting’ it in this way can fix the problem.! You can also swipe upwards with four fingers to reveal the running apps in this way. Swipe left or right to scroll through all running apps. Tap an icon or thumbnail to switch to an open app. ! You don’t always have to use the multitasking bar to switch apps. Using four fingers, swipe left or right to slide between open apps at any time.! - 27. 11. Find My iPhone (or iPad)! Apple's Find My iPad works for all iCloud users. In Settings > iCloud, enter your Apple ID and then turn Find My iPad on near the bottom of the screen. Now if you lose your iPad, you can go to icloud.com or use Find My iPhone on another device to locate the iPad. Wi-Fi-only models will only be detectable when they are connected to a Wi-Fi network.! 12. Use AirPrint! Thanks to AirPrint you can print right from your iPad to any compatible printer. If you've got an AirPrint ready printer then you just choose Print from the Share menu for virtually any open document. AirPrint works with the new range of printers from HP, and you can use a very reasonably-priced Mac app called Printopia (www.ecamm.com) to print to any printer connected to a Mac.! 13. Stop asking to join Wi-Fi networks! Messages asking if you'd like to join this or that Wi- Fi network all the time can be annoying and distracting. Go to Settings, Wi-Fi and turn off Ask to Join Networks. You can still join any network that will have you from this same screen, it just won't bug you constantly when the opportunity arises.! 14. How to lock screen orientation! The iPad screen switches to either the portrait or landscape view in response to the way you hold the device. You can lock the screen orientation to one view so that the screen doesn't rotate (very useful for reading in bed if you lie on your side!). ! Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen to access this function (and many others!). Tap the Orientation icon. Hold the device to the orientation you want and tap the icon to lock it. To unlock it, tap the Orientation icon again. ! Note this grey bar also gives you quick access to volume and brightness controls, wi-fi, bluetooth and ‘do not disturb’ notifications (on/off), timer, camera and Air Play, which allows you to send the iPad’s screen image to another monitor.! 15. Quick volume mute! To quickly mute your iPad, press and hold the Volume-down button (rocker switch on the side). You have the choice of using the lock switch to mute the sound or to lock the iPad's orientation. Go to Settings > General to change the lock switch function. ! - 28. 16. How to ‘restart’ and ‘reboot’ your iPad! In the event that your iPad apps freeze or the system becomes unresponsive, you can try restarting it. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button at the top right corner of your iPad until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and the system will turn off. Turn the system on again by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. This simple power off and back on should usually do the trick. If it doesn’t then a hard reboot should resolve the issue. ! To perform a hard reboot you hold down the Power and Home buttons at the same time for around 10 seconds. Ignore the Slide to Power Off bar across the top of the screen when it appears and just keep pressing the two buttons until you see the iPad screen go black and then see the Apple logo appear on the screen – then let go of both buttons.! 17. My iPad screen is black!! When your iPad runs out of battery, it may take a little while to build up enough charge to start up. Plug it in to a power source and walk away. Leave it plugged in for 10 minutes before you try again. ! " ! If you are using an iPhone charger to charge your iPad it will take a lot longer. iPhone chargers are 5W and iPad chargers are 10W.! !
