PAST SIMPLE
DIDIER HANET ANGULO PANAMEÑO
IT IS USED FOR ACTIONS THAT HAVE STARTED AND
FINISHED IN THE PAST THAT DEPENDING ON WHETHER
THE VERB IS REGULAR OR IRREGULAR WE WILL FOLLOW
ONE FORM OR ANOTHER
TO FORM THE PRESENT SIMPLE WITH
REGULAR VERBS WE USE THE INFINITIVE AND
ADD THE ENDING ED
FOR EXAMPLE: I PLAYED FOOTBALL YESTERDAY
FOR REGULAR VERBS WE MUST KNOW A SERIES OF
EXCEPTIONS SO AS NOT TO MAKE MISTAKES
• For verbs that end in “e”, we willonly add ”ed” for example, “change” (changed). if
the verb ends in a short vowel and a consonant except “y” or “w” we double the
final consonant for example “stop” (stopped). Verbs that end in a consonant more
“y” change the “y” for “I” more “ed” example “study” ( studied).
TO FORM THE PAST TENSE OF AN IRREGULAR
VERB THERE IS NO FIXED FORM FOR IT WE
MUST MEMORIZE ITS FORM. AFFIRMATIVE
SENTENCES WE WILL USE THE STRUCTURE,
subject+verb in the past tense.
FOR EXAMPLE: SHE WANTED TO PLAY
SUBJECT
VERB
COMPLEMENT.
IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES WE USE THE
FOLLOWING STRUCTURE.
subject+did+not+infinitive verb
FOR EXAMPLE: TOM DID NOT STUDY LAST WEEKEND
SUBJECT
DID
NOT
VERB
COMPLEMENT
IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES WITH THE VERB (TO
BE) WE WILL USE THE STRUCTURE. subject+to
be, past tense+not.
FOR EXAMPLE: SHE WAS NOT HERE
SUBJECT
VERB
NOT
COMPLEMEN
FOR INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES WE
USE did+subject+verb in infinitive.
FOR EXAMPLE: DID YOU BUY AND ICE CREAM
DID
SUBJECT
VERB
COMPLEMENT
INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES WITH THE VERB
TO BE. to be, in the past tense + subject...
FOR EXAMPLE: WAS THE MILK IN THE FRIDGE
VERB, TO BE
DUBJECT
COMPLEMENT
THANKS, BYE
