ABOUT THE AUTHOR, & HIS
CONTRIBUTIONS
• Dr. Shankar Raghunath Phatak born on 16th
September 1896 at Pune.
• He completed his graduation from Grant
medical College(M.B.B.S) in 1924.
• Not satisfied with Allopathy, practised
Ayurveda for some time then
pharmacognosy came in his way of practising
Ayurveda.
• So he went back again to Allopathy. That was the
period of “Therapeutic Nihilism”. Probably that
was the reason for his dissatisfaction.
• In 1932, he switched over to pure Homoeopathy.
From this time he devoted his life for
Homoeopathy.
• He was Lecturer in Bombay Homoeopathic
medical college and member of court of
Examiners constituted by government of
Bombay.
• Among all the master minds in Homoeopathy,
Dr. C.M. Boger influenced him the most. In fact if
he had to practice Homoeopathy with single
book it will be Dr. Boger’s SYNOPTIC KEY.
HIS CONTRIBUTIONS:
• Repertory of the biochemic remedies, Indian
edition, 1937.
• A homoeopathic Repertory in Marathi,
1940.
• A concise Repertory of Homoeopathic
medicines, Indian Edition , 1963.
• Materia medica of homoeopathic medicines,

represented by small letters Agg. or Amel.
• Desires and Cravings are two separate rubrics in this
repertory.
• Under Desires, we find all mental rubrics.
• Under Craving- rubrics related to food and drinks
• Aversion- both mental and food aversions are given
• Under Food and drinks- Agg. And Amel. of food

inorder to find the appropriate rubric. This is given
after the word “see’’ in brackets immediately after

ABDOMEN Laparotomy after,
FORCEPS DELIVERY after
• Mental attitudes will be seen under each mental

• Eg : DESPAIR, hopelessness – Anger wit, Trifles
over
• For all general modalities & all particular
modalities AGG & AMEL are given.
• In each rubric, all important symptoms, their
concomitants & modalities are given.
RUBRICS that are special to Phatak :
• AEROPLANE, flying in AGG.
• BAROMETER
• BERI BERI
• BILE DUCTS
• BIRTHMARK, naevi
• BLOOD PRESSURE High
• CEREBRO-SPINAL Axis
• COTTONY feeling
• HESITATES
• PHILOSOPHER
• PROPHYLACTICS
• ULNAR NERVE along
ADVANTAGES
• Handy can easily use in bedside.
• Alphabetically arranged so very easy to find
out the rubrics.
• Many rubrics especially modalities not found
in other repertories are available here.
• The author has put forward a few new
readings from his own experience. The rubric
like blood pressure, bronchitis,
bronchiectasis, colitis etc are very useful for
nosological rubrics.
• Though this book is very small, it contains
many rubrics which are not obtained in
other books.
• In each rubric --location, sensation,
modality & concomitants are given, also
general modalities & mental symptoms. So it
can be used for systematic repertorisation.
• Remedies for particular rubrics are reduced to
minimum possible by a careful selection,
which helps to reach the similimum, easily.
• Very useful for eliminating process of
repertorization.
• Many clinical and pathological rubrics mentioned
which help in selecting remedies specially when
there is absence of guiding symptoms.
• The information is taken from authentic sources
as well as from authors own experience. No drug
is used unless the author has verified it in his own
experience.
• DRAWBACKS
• Rubrics and remedies are very much minimized.
• Mental symptoms are scattered and very less in
number in comparison to other’s repertory.
• Many rubrics and sub rubrics contains single
medicine or few medicines, so difficulty in
repertorization.
• A concise repertory can never replace
exhaustive repertories like Kent’s Repertory.
• Certain rubrics are not well defined,
means its real meaning and exact
sources of words is not present. Eg.
Associated effects
• Rare drugs are rarely represented
though given in the abbreviation after
the preface.
• Though gradations are present but its
evaluation is not mentioned anywhere.
• ADAPTABILITY
Cases with
• Prominent Cause.
• Well marked modalities
• Where concomitants are present
• Sensation and location are next to
mental.
Working out method
• A Concise Repertory of Homoeopathic Materia Medica
is a amplified version of Boger’s A Synoptic key of the
Materia Medica by Dr. C.M. Boger.
• He accepted the Boenninghausen and Boger’s
approach to the patient
• GENERAL MODALITIES,
• CONCOMITANTS,
• PHYSICAL GENERALS,
• LOCATIONS
• MENTAL STATE.
