projects. At the Village of Homewood, he was also
responsible for implementing improvements to its six
facilities. Outside of work, Patrick Ryan is an avid hiker
who has explored several trails in Yellowstone National
Park and Kodiak Island.

The quality of your boots plays a large part in your
success as a hiker. When choosing your boots, consider
the terrain that you will walk on. If you intend to follow
well-worn trails, you can opt for softer boots that offer a
greater degree of flexibility. However, uneven terrain will
require a more rigid boot that provides support for your
ankles.

When trying your boots on, test that you have some
wiggle room in the toe box. Extended periods of hiking
can lead to your feet swelling, which this extra room
accounts for. The boot should also offer a snug fit
around the heel area. If it doesn’t, you leave yourself
open to rubbing, which can cause blisters.

How to Acclimatize During Your Trip to
Everest Base Camp

As the former assistant director of Village of
Homewood, Patrick Ryan focused his efforts on the
maintenance and operation of infrastructure. Outside of
his work, Patrick Ryan is an experienced hiker who has
made the trek to Mount Everest’s Base Camp. For those
thinking about making the same trek, it’s important to
acclimate your body to the conditions you’ll face during
the climb.

High altitudes often have adverse effects on
inexperienced hikers and climbers. This is especially the
case once you ascend above 9,800 feet. Once you break
this barrier, aim to increase your sleeping altitude by no
more than 1,000 feet each day. This gives your body the
chance to adjust to lower oxygen levels and ensures you
recuperate adequately for the next day.

It’s also important to keep your body hydrated when

altitudes, coupled with the dryer air that you breathe
when climbing, dehydrates your body quickly. Aim to

the United States is experiencing due to climate change,
cities, states, and regions are developing policies that
reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas
emissions. To assist with this, Northern Arizona
University’s professor Kevin Gurney published a detailed
report of greenhouse gas emissions across the country
in the Journal of Geophysical Research in October 2020.

Gurney, who was funded by NASA, developed his high-
resolution emissions map as a tool for policy and
scientific applications. As state and local governments
create and implement policies to reduce emissions, they
can use the map to get a useful baseline idea of where
they currently stand in terms of emissions. This lets
them create more targeted and specific policies, rather
than the broad ones they often focus on.

A safety inspection specialist based in Illinois, Patrick
Ryan is the vice president of Batista Group in Lombard,
Illinois, where he specializes in rehabilitating
construction sites and administering wastewater  and
potable water systems. He has also worked as the
assistant director of operations at the Village of
Homewood. Patrick Ryan oversaw the storm sewer and
water collection system and well as the collection and
disposal of waste while working at the Village of
Homewood.

Wastewater, also known as sewage, refers to water
collected from sinks, washing machines, showers,
baths, and toilets in homes and industries through
centralized public sewer systems. It is composed mainly
of water, organic matter (such as human waste, food
waste, and debris), and chemical wastes from homes
and industries.

Effective treatment of wastewater by wastewater
management bodies is inevitable in getting rid of
substances that can be dangerous to human health
before releasing the water to the ground surface for
reuse. It is essential for ensuring the conservation of
available water resources continuity.

Wastewater treatment occurs in a series of steps,
including solid separation, biological substance removal,
settling, filtration, and disinfection. Typically, the end
product of treated wastewater is free from all kinds of
contaminants and safe for human consumption.

Kodiak Island in Alaska is one of the largest islands in
the U.S. More than two-thirds of the island is a protected
wildlife refuge. Visitors are allowed to hike through the
reserve to view indigenous animals such as the Kodiak
brown bear.

Tourists can also join whale watching excursions right
off Kodiak's coast on the Gulf of Alaska. Out-of-state
hunters can also obtain permits to participate in the
island’s bi-annual hunting seasons. Deep-sea fishing
charters can be easily arranged from the island. Anglers
can also find excellent fishing spots for salmon on
several of the rivers that run through Kodiak.

from March 2012 to September 2013. At the Village of
Homewood, Patrick Ryan led the evaluations of
buildings and other structures to determine their
maintenance schedules. An avid outdoorsman, he has
hiked and camped at Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park is an excellent destination
for those who love nature. It features miles of hiking
trails, wildlife such as elk and bison, high-altitude lakes,
and hundreds of geysers. Millions of visitors come to
Yellowstone throughout the year, primarily for hiking and
camping. Permits are required for an overnight stay at
the park.

Yellowstone has over 900 miles of hiking trails standing
that are more than 7,000 feet above sea level. The trails
are intertwined with each other, enabling backpackers to
make varied multi-day treks. Some of the trails are easy
and recommended for families. For instance, the Lone
Star Geyser trail is a 4.8-mile round trip. It is a perfect
alternative to seeing Old Faithful geyser, which is often
crowded with hikers during the peak of the season.
Hikers can witness the Lone Star Geyser erupt about 30
to 45 feet in the air roughly every three hours.

Twelve campgrounds are accessible to cars around
Yellowstone, which comprise 1,700 campsites. The
Canyon Campground, for instance, has 273 reservable
campsites. It is about 7,900 feet above sea level and
located in the middle of a pine forest. From the Canyon
Campground, campers can take a short and easy hike to
Cascade Lake, or a more strenuous hike to Mt.
Washburn.

techniques and the latest innovations in equipment. It
highlights the skills of the climbers while providing a
competitive learning environment for industry players.

The tree climbing competition is not an ordinary
competition. The different events within the competition
are simulations of real working conditions of arborists.
For instance, the preliminary round will test the climber’s
ability to safely maneuver in the tree while
simultaneously performing tasks that care for the tree.

The preliminary round is composed of several events.
The Ascent event measures the climber’s ability to
safely utilize his or her approved ascent system. The
Throwline event assesses the climber’s ability to
accurately place a throwline, or climbing line in a tree
within a specified time. The Aerial Rescue event tries the
climber’s ability to ascend to point in the tree and safely
lower down a 160-pound person who is unable to
descend from the tree without assistance. The Work
Climb event tests the climber’s ability to use a climbing
system in moving within the tree. The Speed Climb
event tests the climber’s ability to ascend through a
predetermined route up to 50 feet from the ground with
the help of a belayed climbing system for safety.

The top men and women finishers in the preliminary
round will advance to the Master’s Challenge round to
compete for the championship title.

China Temporarily Closes Access to
Mount Everest Base Camp

Patrick Ryan presently acts as vice president of the
Batista Group. Previously, he served as public works
director of the City of Hyattsville and assistant director
of the Village of Homewood. In his free time, Patrick
Ryan enjoys adventure travel and has ventured to Mount
Everest base camp.

Mount Everest is a beacon for many travelers, especially
those with an inkling for the adventurous and extreme.
Some deign to hike to the top of the mountain, while
others are satisfied with a journey to the base camp.

There are two base camps, one in China and the other in
Nepal. More people visit the mountain from the Nepal
side, but that journey takes approximately two weeks of
hiking. The Chinese side, in Tibet, is accessible by car.

Earlier in 2019, China announced that it was closing its
Everest base camp to tourists. This decision was made
in order to deal with the mounting trash problem at the
camp. Ordinary visitors may still go as far as the

mountaineers with a permit to climb to the peak of the
mountain will still be allowed to access the higher

According to the Chinese government, this is a
temporary closure.
