As many of you know, we rotate the leadership of this Wed. nite Bible study each week.
We just started the tradition of the leader giving a brief testimony of how God has
impacted their life and some of their experiences.
Well, God has certainly shown me his provision through the years and I certainly have
had some very unique experiences in my life that I would like to share with you. I hope
that you will see this presentation as inspirational to you.
This past March, I was asked to give my testimony by a friend at Grace Bible Church in
north Dallas at their monthly Business Discipleship Outreach. So I created a slide show
for that, but I had a lot more time to share it there than I do tonight. They made a video
of my presentation and we will have it available for you to see the full version when you
get the email from Jeff or Yujin with tonight’s summary and prayer requests that they
send out each week. We really appreciate Yujin and Jeff helping us with that. And don’t
you enjoy our prayer format with the praise shown first, then the request. I am so
encouraged each week when I read all the praises that each man shares every week.

in your email. But I wanted to hit some of the highlights for you tonight.
Each of you also have a handout promoting the book I wrote about some of my
experiences and some of what I will share with you tonight. If you want a signed copy
of my book, I do have some extra copies from book signing events for you if you let me
know after the Bible study tonight. Notice I have numbered them 1-20 so you can follow
along. I have since added to this which is all shown in the full video.

• Jan. 1, 2009 – I Entered Parkland Hospital to
get a diabetes prescription refill discount
after loss of my job in November.
• The doctor asked if I was having any other
problems. I said that I had been having some
headaches. As a precaution, he ordered an
MRI.
• Jan. 2 – The MRI revealed a brain tumor……

Jan. 2 – They drilled a hole in my head and
inserted a tube to drain fluid that had
built up in my brain.

Jan. 5 – Had Brain Surgery –
They cut my head open from
ear to ear, removed a 2”x4”
portion of my skull, sent a
metal probe down into my brain
and removed the tumor.

Dallas for a Senior
Architect position.

Feb. 11 – I was hired for the City job.
Feb. 18 - I had a seizure at work outside my office on
the 6th floor of Dallas City Hall downtown.
I fell like a tree, breaking my arm bone.
Mar. 2 – Surgeon sewed my bones back together.
Mar. 4 -- I was back to work with my arm in a sling.

Mar. 9 – I had another body seizure at work.
This time, I stopped breathing.
My face turned blue and then gray.
I was brought back to life with CPR by a co-worker, Carl
Janick.
On the way to the hospital in the ambulance, I pulled my
shoulder apart again.
I have no memory of this event. I was only told later
what happened.
After this, the doctor put me on anti-seizure medicine.

Mar. 23 – I had Shoulder Surgery again in the
same location. The surgeon screwed a 2”x4” metal plate
with 7- 1” screws to hold the bones together.
Those remain in my arm today.

• From April to May the City of Dallas suspended my
job with no pay.
• Fortunately, I had great support from family and
friends.
• These are only a few of my life-changing events - all
during the first 3 months of 2009.

Rewind 61 years ------
Life event #1.
I was born a triplet on Dec. 3, 1955 –
4th of 6 children in my family
in Jacksonville, TX. East Texas. Each of our other
siblings got a baby to hold. 3 boys , 3 girls.
Dad was a physician.
Mommy stayed home taking care of us. She played
piano & organ in church.

This was a newspaper photo of my Family of 8 driving to the 1960 World’s Fair in New York
City in a station wagon. I’m the little “cowboy” standing in the back of the “wagon”.

#2. Mommy died when I was 5 years old in 1961. She was 46.
Note the porcelain painted color photo on her footstone here.

Mommy & Dad were married 21 years.
Her death left Dad with 6 children & no mother.
When I was in my 40’s, at Sunday School at church one Sunday, a prayer
was voiced for a man whose wife died and left him with 6 children and no
mother. Only then, I realized that my Dad was like that man. I was filled with
emotion for not having fully thanked God for providing and protecting me
for over 35 years. The prayers of many people back then were answered
positively, just like the current prayers.

At the bottom of her tombstone, the inscription reads:
“I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.”
Phil. 4:13 This became my life Bible verse.

#3. Dad married my Stepmother 2 years later
when I was 7 in 1963.
Dad & Mother were married 32 years
The Sound of Music movie shows the captain marrying Maria, not the self-
centered Baroness. My Dad married the Baroness, who became my Mother.

Growing up in a small town in east Texas was great. My family prayed
together, went to church together, we had friends playing in back yard
every weekend, riding bikes in the neighborhood, playing in the creek
down the street. We took many family vacations. We had a 55 acre
farm outside of town with a few cows. Many weekends and summers
were spent working out there, bailing hay, building fences. God gave
me a very secure, loving environment to grow up in and I am so
grateful for that.
Every year, for our birthday, the local newspaper had a full page
spread on what the Verheyden triplets were doing. We were kind of
like local celebrities. We had big birthday parties and usually 3 cakes.
This lasted 18 years til we left home for college. Mother made us each
a scrapbook with the photos from each year. Great memories!

#5. College & single life- ages 18-26,
1974 - 1981.

Yes, I used to have hair, and a lot of it!!

In high school, I was
Student Body President,
Captain of varsity football team,
playing linebacker & kicker. I
wore #51, Dick Butkus’ number,
if any of you guys remember
him. I was also Captain &
played 4 years varsity tennis.
At University of Texas in Austin, I played many intramural sports,
including finishing 4th in the Texas Relays 4 x 100 meter relay,
running the 2nd leg. I used to be pretty fast!
Those were the good ‘ole days!

I met with these 9 men in a Bible Study and prayer group once every week
for 4 years. We were called, “The Brethren”.

#6. My older sister, Sylvia, died
when I was 23 in 1978. She was 29.
Her death left a giant hole in my life.

#7. Married at age 27 in 1982 to Donna. June 2017
will be 35 years together. 2nd best decision I ever made.
Donna & I were best friends 4 years before we even dated. When her
boyfriend (my roommate) broke up with her, she was really upset. She said,
“God must have someone else better picked out for me.” A voice from
heaven clearly told me, “You are that better man”. But it wasn’t until months
later that we even dated. She’s still my best friend.

#8. Birth of first daughter, Kay Lynn, in 1986.
2nd love of my life. She graduated from Mary Hardin Baylor In Nursing.
Lives in Austin as Oncology nurse. Married 2010. No children yet, but we
are praying for a miracle. We were in Indian Princess father-daughter
program at the YMCA. Her Indian name is Shining Star.
My Indian name is Bright Moon.

#9. Birth of first son, Phillip John, in 1987.
When Donna was pregnant with Phillip, I went into remorse because I did not want to
share my love for Kay Lynn. Not sure I could love another child. Phillip barely missed
winning a football state championship. Starting fullback. Graduated from UT in 2010. He
is a Computer Architect in Austin. He married Loren in 2016.
His Indian name is Shooting Star because he won us a Turkey at the BB gun shoot.

#10. I survived a major Delta Plane Crash at DFW
Airport when I was 33 in August 1988. I was on my way
to Salt Lake City, Utah, designing a Water Park there.
These pictures I took
2 days after the crash.
A reporter from the
Austin American
Statesman called me
and asked if I wanted
to visit the crash.

I was sitting on the left side in front of the wing.
13 people died on that plane.

Scott Owen, died on the plane, but I did not know until later. He went to my
church. At his funeral, my pastor said, “God has a purpose for everyone – For
Scott to die, and for Paul Verheyden sitting in the back, meant to survive that
crash.”
I was not physically injured except for hand burns and smoke inhalation. but I
had emotional and spiritual problems. I thought I was fireproof, doing things no
Christian husband or father should do. Then, 4 years later, men laid hands on
my head and prayed for me and I had a miraculous healing. 2002 all things
became new.

This photo appeared on the front page of the Austin American Statesmen. Many
newspaper articles featured my experience. Mr. Alfieri with NTSB showed a great act
of kindness to me that day. When I arrived at the crash site, security would not let me
in. He noticed my despair being there and let me into the site, asking me questions
about the crash. This experience helped me get some closure on this life changing
event.

Texas at age 34 in 1989.

#12. Birth of 2nd son, Vincent Lee, in 1990.
Cutest little Tiger Cub Scout. Sold lots of Scout Popcorn. People could not
say no to Vincent. Starting lineman at First Baptist Academy Saints 2 years.
Graduated from UNT in 2015 with Bachelors degree in Economics. He is
teaching elementary school in Seoul, Korea. His Indian name is Eagle Eye
Goldfish War for the Thunder. There’s a story behind that!

#13. Survived Car Crash when I was 36 in 1991.
Blazer ran red light and plowed into the side of my car. I had a few broken
ribs. Donna got gash in her arm from broken glass. We were on our way
to Dr. appointment after problems in pregnancy. We had a miscarriage.
This was a bad day.

#14. Registered Interior Designer,
State of Texas, age 37 in 1992.

#15. Birth of 2nd daughter, Kristen Marie, in 1993.
Our Baby. Our 4th child. We had fun in YMCA Indian Princess. Her Indian
name is Twinkling Star. She is very spiritual and is a “Fashionista.”
Graduated from UT in 2016 in Communications, Public Relations.
She works for large equity firm as Executive Asst. in Austin.

4 of my greatest accomplishments was being a good Dad to each of our 4 children.
I was involved in everything with them, sports, family activities, scouts, YMCA, church,
reading the Bible and praying with them, etc. I cannot imagine a Dad that would not want to be
involved with their kids. I consider it a real honor to have made a positive impact on the lives
of these great people! Many have complimented Donna & I on how great they are.
God certainly has blessed our lives with them.

#16. Mother died when I was 40 in 1995. She was 82.
When she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she decided to not take treatment. Before she
died, I told her, “Mother, you seem so peaceful about dying.” She said, “Paul, I am peaceful. Are
you peaceful?” At that time, I was struggling with many things in my life. I sunk my head into her
lap and just bawled crying. She comforted me and assured me that God would help me. Mother’s
“Baroness” style caused quite a bit of problems with us growing up. But she was always there for
me when I needed her. I loved Mother, and I knew she loved me. God used her to impact my life
in a positive way. I still miss her.

#17. Dad married Laverna when I was 41 in 1996. He was 80.
She was 76. They were both widowed twice and had known each other
for 50 years. They were married 10 years.
She brought great love back to our family and still does. She is now 93.
She knew Mommy and brought out her pictures that Mother hid for
32 years.

#18. First major surgery. Separation of
both legs simultaneously at age 44 in 2000.

• Ruptured both patellar tendons, right & left legs.
• No connection between upper and lower legs.
• Orthopedic surgeon drilled holes in my knee
caps, threaded string through holes and sewed
tissues back together.
• In hospital for 10 days.
• Full-length white hard plaster casts on both legs
from groin to ankles for 6 weeks.
• Loss of work for 3 months.
• Muscles atrophied – Had to learn to walk again.
• Physical Therapy 3 x/week for 6 months.
• Regret not having any photos of white casts on
both legs. Walked like Frankenstein since
bones not broken.
• Little did I know that this experience helped me
later in my brain and other future surgeries.

Both of our sons are Eagle Scouts 2002 & 2007.
I was a Boy Scout Leader for 15 years.

#19. Miracle of the Crusaders Football Team at age 47 in 2003.
Channel 8 Sports, did a 3 minute story on us including showing us reading
the Bible at practice. Our sons went to private school with no football program
so we started this independent team with 10 games scheduled with other
private schools our first year. I designed & bought uniforms & all equipment,
became head varsity coach, created plays. Only played 1 full season.
2nd year, not enough players.

Had about 60 kids involved in the total football program.

#20. Dad died when I was 50 in 2006. He was 90.
Later, Laverna gave me His Bible that I had given him a few
years earlier with the Bible Reading chart taped in the cover.

May 29, 2009, 6 months after my brain surgery,
I returned to work with the City of Dallas at
full salary. Since Dec. 2009, I have had no
medicine for seizures.

• When I was in the hospital, one of my brain surgeons,
when he showed me the MRI of the brain tumor, said,
“We are not letting you out of here until we get that
tumor out of your head. You could die tomorrow
without surgery. We normally find something like
this in an autopsy.”
• Then one of the other surgeons said,
“Looks like you get to LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY.”
Immediately, I burned with motivation to tell others about this
experience. I said, “That is going to be the title of my new book.
Can I use that title?” He said, “Sure!”
So I asked the nurse to get me a pen and some paper. She gave me a
notebook. I sketched out the cover and started writing. I kept writing
until God told me to stop.

. My book about this and the details of all 23 events was published in
January, 2010. I have had several book-signing events at various bookstores.

Dec. 2010 - Moved to 80 acre Trees Farm, DeSoto, TX
Crawford Trees , Donna’s great, great Grandfather, was the
10th largest landowner in Dallas County in the mid 1800’s,
First marriage license in Dallas County.
We live in Donna’s grandfather’s house built 1969, about 50 yrs ago.
This barn still stands - built in 1899 – 117 years ago.

When we moved to the farm, we noticed a lot of old rusted metal farm
equipment laying around – and a lot of it. We got several people to look
at hauling off the equipment and other Items and split the profits from the
metal recycling. After 2 weeks sun up til sun down and 25 full loads, we
finished the farm clean-up and haul-off.
Results were:
80,000 pounds of metal
$.10/pound
70 /30 split
Do the math.

So why is all this old rusted metal relevant and why am I showing you this?
Because all of us, at some point in our lives, need to clean up our lives and get rid of the “old rusted
metal” – the things we no longer use, or the things we hold on to or depend on that are no longer
useful in our lives – to us, or to anyone else. I’m not talking about just physical or tangible things,
I’m talking about the things or even activities that we don’t want to get rid of, that we are hanging on
to that are not important, but weight us down and keep us from being all we can be for God and
others. You know what it is. Let go and let God have His way with you and free yourself up from the
“old rusted metal” to serve Him and others.
Also, this metal had been there for years and at just the right time, God used the profits from this
metal recycling to provide for us when I was out of work and needed the money.
It’s amazing how God provides for us just when we need it most.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where
thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not
destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Verheyden Longhorn Legacy since my Dad graduated
in 1939.

July 2016 The T-shirt Story
Kristen met Connor Frizzelle in July of 2016 in Austin at a river rafting party. After only a
few weeks of dating, Connor was talking to his parents about how great Kristen was, how
she loved the Lord, she was so beautiful inside & out and he thought she was “the one” for
him. So his mother, Sherry, said “Let’s pray and ask God to confirm with you and give you
a sign and mark her if she is “the one” for you.
A few days later, Connor was over at Kristen’s house. She was wearing a t-shirt that she
got from a friend of hers during a sleep-over 10 years ago. It was one of her favorite old
shirts to wear. When Connor saw it, he said, “Wait, that’s my t-shirt! Where did you get that?”
She told him her story about it.
He said, “That’s the special T-shirt that was made for my Red Oak School basketball team
when we won district! I was the starting guard. Look on the back of the shirt. All of the
players names are on it. My name is on it.”
Sure enough, Kristen turned it around. His name was right in the middle, at the top,
Connor Frizzelle, #14.
She had been wearing his name on her back for 10 years without even knowing about it.
This was Connor’s sign from God that Kristen was “the one” for him.
He later told me that this was day 5 of a 10 day fast and only 3 days after his mom prayed
for the sign from God. He somehow got the shirt from Kristen and framed it. He surprised
her and gave it to her for Valentines Day a week ago.

August 2016 - Vincent moved to South Korea to teach
elementary school. He joined former UNT roommate.

My Godmother, Erma celebrated her 106 Birthday on
October 9, 2016. She said she was down on her knees
praying for me during my many surgeries. A real Prayer Warrior
that I am so glad that is in my life! She remembers everything!

February 2016 Joined Pastor’s Prayer Partners
On October 23, 2016, I was chosen to lead the prayers of
over 50 men for Dr. Robert Jeffress at First Baptist Dallas.
Over 200 men in group praying every week for pastor, staff, church.

New Year’s Eve – 2016 Kristen engaged to Connor Frizzelle.
He proposed on University of Texas campus in front of the tower & the
historic Littlefield Fountain. Here’s the love birds last Christmas.

Facilities Manager, Affiliated Computer Services –
Managed 350,000 s.f. multi-building campus of all maintenance,
design & construction – former location of 7-11 Headquarters.

Maintenance Manager of 117 Exxon Mobil stores in DFW
Metroplex. Managed work of 75 vendors of various trades.

Greyhound Bus Terminal Renovation - Dallas

The Director of Facilities said, “In my 10 years at
Greyhound, I have never seen a project managed as
well as this one.”

12-phase project, tore out walls, replaced all interior finishes,
signage, ticket counters, etc. All while remaining in full operation.

Greyhound Bus Terminal, Pittsburgh, PA. I managed the demolition of
the existing terminal, the move into the temporary terminal, & the design
of this new terminal.
As Sr. PM for Greyhound, I managed design & construction of 253
locations in 23 states – Central U.S..

Donna & I started using the SOS Bible Reading Chart over 25 years ago,
reading together as a family every day. We believe that is one reason why
each of our 4 children came to know Jesus & the Holy Spirit at a very early
age. The chart has been taped inside the covers of each of ours and our 4
kids’ Bibles for years.
Reading God’s Word twice each day, every day, is a non-negotiable habit in
my life. Last December 2016, I completed 8 consecutive years of reading
day and night every day, 365 days each year, without fail.
