Too much to cover in 15 minutes? Probably… The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
Trends Mobility Just in time (Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere) Narrowcasting and personalisation (long tail) Peer group construction Contextualisation Convergence/Divergence Adding value Informal rather than formal structuring The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
Trends 2 New user interfaces Even white goods are smart! Fun toys are also learning tools No wires needed No device needed (smart clothes) “ Viewer” choice (broadcast becomes interactive) Behind the scenes intelligence (Scaffolding) Put an e in front of any traditional learning service! The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
Trends 3 Ubiquitous computing (Mark Weiser) Augmented reality Social computing Remixing and Web 2.0 Quick and Dirty, not “polished” … The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology

Future Gadgets… The ring phone and tooth phone (finger clicking good) Disposable camcorders … And we’re only scratching the surface http://www.microsoft.com/surface/ The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
Conclusion No such things as bad or good technology Not all new technology is appropriate for learning Replace or enhance existing technology? Do “Digital Natives” (Marc Prensky) adapt better? The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
Conclusion 2 Remixing and converging (e.g. Digital Paper and Digital pen) What goes on behind the scenes is sometimes more important that what is presented (Scaffolding and resource development) Good pedagogy must be at the heart of any solution The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
We would be wise to heed part of Prensky's advice and do what we can to learn about Digital Native culture as it emerges. However, good teaching also aims to improve students' ability to engage in higher-order thinking; it recognizes the diversity of learners' abilities and needs; and it reflects an awareness of both the complexity of the learning process and the need to make adjustments in different circumstances. Human teachers do not always accomplish all of these tasks at once, or any one of them consistently. Even so, there has yet to be a computer program that can come even close to replicating what a human teacher does on a daily basis. Rather than focusing on the development of computer applications that teach, I am in favor of creating better tools for teachers, and then helping teachers become better users of the tools. (Timothy VanSlyke) The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology
