The importance of PDHPE in Primary Schools

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO
TEACH PDHPE IN PRIMARY
SCHOOLS?
WHERE DOES
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
FIT IN THE PDHPE
SYLLABUS?
PDHPE is an important key learning area especially
within the Primary Curriculum as it emphasises
on the physical, social, spiritual, emotional and
mental growth of all students. It provides
important movement skills and provides a positive
attitude towards lifelong healthy goals!
 As future teachers we need to make
sure the physical activity experiences
the children have at school are
positive ones, as it will impact on
their attitude later in life.
 The emphasise on fun needs to be
made clear in all the activities the
children play, as they need to feel
good and happy about themselves
participating. Activities should
include a variety of challenges and
free play to allow creativity and
independence.
 Students need to feel a sense
of comfort and safety when
playing sports with others.
They need to know that it’s
okay to make mistakes as it’s
a part of developing skills. It
is also important that
students experience success
to motivate them further.
 If a student does lack
confidence in their abilities it
is important that teachers
focus on self-improvement
rather than compare them
with other students.
REMEMBER…
 Physical education involves
a variety of key factors
including; fun and
excitement, success and
skill development. These
need to be maintained in a
child’s life in order to ensure
that physical activity
patterns continue
throughout their lives.
