INTRODUCTION
Writing is a system for interpersonal
communication using various styles of
language (Jalaludin, 2011).
Peer editing is a step in the writing
process that helps students evaluate and
improve the quality of their written work in
so many ways.
What is Peer Editing?
• A peer is someone your own age
• Editing means making
suggestions, comments,
compliments, and changes to
writing.
 Peer editing means working with
someone your own age –usually
someone in your class- to help
improve, revise, and edit his or
her writing.
Peer editing is the processes through which students respond
to and provide feedback on their peers' writing highlighting
the positive and the negative aspects in a way to help each other
reach better written products.
Peer Editing Technique for Teaching Writing
• Students must know what is wrong, before they can get its
right.
• Students should take an active role in the community process
of writing.
• Students cannot write in a vacuum.
• The more students are actively engaged in something, the
better they learn it.
• Less paperwork for the teacher
The Steps of Peer Editing
• Choose the peers
• Exchange papers
• Use the rubric sheets you provided
• Put the editor’s name
• Give the students time to read through the essay
• Underline the mistakes and write the editing
symbols above
• After finishing, students get their papers
back
• Correct their own papers
• Consult to the editor for clarification
• Remind them to negotiate their mistakes with
the editor
• Let them use dictionaries and class notes
while correcting their mistakes.
1. THE ADVANTAGES OF PEER
EDITING
a. Students can gain confidence in their work
b. It helps students identify problems in their own writing
c. It gives students a chance to write for a broader audience
than their instructor
d. It stands a better chance of being livelier and more engaging
than papers written solely for a removed authority figure
e. Asking students to teach is a great teaching tool.
2. The Disadvantages
a) Lack of Critique Experience
b) Constructive Criticism
c) More Work for Instructors
d) Sometimes the corrections which peers gave
weaken a paper.
e) Reader Judgments
