INTRODUCTION
 Petrochemical refineries are huge structure with different pipelines
handling streams of oil and chemicals through the large chemical
processing units.
 To keep this process constant, pipes must be stable against eccentric
forces generated by its self-weight, thermal, seismic or wind actions and
external means like, electrical, instrumental, telecommunication cable
trays, auxiliary equipment like air cooler, pressure sustaining valves etc
 Therefore in this study, steel tonnage of structure is reduced for
sustainability by implementing Innovative Bracing pattern at appropriate
locations of pipe rack for the optimized design of sway and tonnage of
structure.
 It is observed that lateral movement decreases up to 80% due to the
incorporation of the bracing system. …(Ref. Nayanmoni Chetia, 2016)

Types of Typical Bracing Frequently used in Industry:
‘V’ Type ‘A’ Type
Single diagonal
Cross bracing
‘K’ Type

OBJECTIVES
 To investigate the suitable type of bracing in industrial pipe rack steel
structure.
 To investigate the accurate location of bracing in structure.
 Compare the different types of bracings V, A, X, K, Diagonal as per
their benefits and drawbacks.
 To study the different loads and their behaviour on structure.
 To reduce the effect of horizontal loads on structure.
 To reduce the cost of structure by reducing the tonnage of structure.

 Being a very expensive and heavy structure because of lots of heavy load, it has to
be more stable and should be designed for lateral forces. To achieve that, the design
required is also heavy.
 This heavy design can be reduced by implementation of bracing system.
 There are different types of bracing can be used for different structure appropriately.
So it is essential to find out perfect type of bracing for industrial structure with its
appropriate location.

1. Comparison of Different Bracing Systems for Tall Buildings :-
Author :- Z.A. Siddiqi, Rashid Hameed.
Z.A. Siddiqi, Rashid Hameed, “Comparison of Different Bracing
Systems for Tall Buildings” concluded that, When a tall building is subjected to
lateral or torsional deflections under the action of fluctuating wind loads, the
resulting oscillatory movement can induce a wide range of responses in the
building’s occupants from mild discomfort to acute nausea. As a result, lateral
stiffness is a major consideration in the design of tall buildings.
In this research study, five different types of bracing systems have been
investigated for the use in tall building in order to provide lateral stiffness and finally
the optimized design.
When columns are braced along their minor axis of bending, provision of
‘A’ bracing results in minimum value of lateral displacement compared to other
four types of bracing systems.

three different patterns experimentally evaluated.
In this research paper bracing pattern were same but the position of bracing
were different.
