Activity-based costing (ABC) and the balanced scorecard (BSC) are established management methods that provide complementary benefits when linked together. ABC provides cost and performance data about business activities, resources, products and customers. This data can provide up to 30% of the performance measures included in the BSC. The BSC translates strategic goals into quantitative measures across key performance dimensions, and managers can use ABC as a diagnostic tool to analyze the root causes of any scorecard performance problems. Successfully linking ABC and BSC requires automating data collection and sharing updated ABC data with the BSC on a monthly or quarterly basis.
