This document provides instructions for a persuasive PowerPoint project on the topic of whether the United States should continue to fund space exploration. Students will choose a position and develop 5 slides to argue their point of view using facts and persuasive techniques. Slide 1 is an introduction with a hook, thesis statement, and overview of 3 reasons. Slides 2-4 each present one reason using a different persuasive technique. Slide 5 is a conclusion that restates the main points and leaves the audience with a final thought. Students are prompted to use their weakest argument first and save the strongest for last.

- 1. -104775-1905005895975-257175Persuasive PowerPoint Project: Integrated English and Science Unit<br />You will be choosing a position to the question, “Should the United States of America continue to fund space exploration or should this program end?” You will be completing research that will be used for your English project, which will be a PowerPoint. However, you will be collecting some extra information that you will use later for a Science Project. Your English PowerPoint will use the following format:<br />Slide #1- Introduction: Will contain a paragraph that states your thesis statement (your position), at least three reasons you are taking this position and a closing sentence. (Note: You may need more than one slide to fit your introduction, but for the purpose of outlining, we will call this Slide #1.)<br />Slide #2- Reason 1 AND Persuasive Technique #1 : Will contain reason #1 for your position and will use one of the persuasive techniques learned in class.<br />Slide #3- Reason 2 AND Persuasive Technique #2 : Will contain reason #2 for your position and will use one of the persuasive techniques learned in class that was NOT used on Slide #2 .<br />Slide #4- Reason 3 AND Persuasive Technique #3 : Will contain reason #3 for your position and will use one of the persuasive techniques learned in class that was NOT used on Slides #1 or 2 .<br />Slide #5- Conclusion: Will contain a paragraph that summarizes the three reasons you provided in the body of your PowerPoint and will end with a final point. Opening with a strong statement: Smoking should not only be banned in public places, but outlawed completely.<br />3. Opening with an Anecdote: An anecdote can provide an amusing and attention-getting opening if it is short and to the point. Opening with a Statistic or Fact: Sometimes a statistic or fact will add emphasis or interest to your topic.
