Spearfish 350 Climate Celebrations
Spearfish, S.D, Oct. 24 — Local organizations Hills Horizon and People for the Ethical
Treatment of the Environment (P.E.T.E) are assembling a coalition with hundreds of
organizations committed to a vision of a more sustainable world. On Oct. 24, Hills
Horizon and P.E.T.E. are hosting a Speaker Series and Concert at the Bandshell in
Spearfish City Park. The events kick off at 11 a.m. with a speaker from Repower
America following entertainment provided by Dylan Lewis and Friends. During this time
snacks and warm beverages will be provided. Following the entertainment we will take it
to the streets and march for Climate Awareness. The march will begin at 1 p.m. in the
park and finish at the base of Lookout Mountain, where those who are interested can
hike to the top and demonstrate their commitment to reducing CO2 emissions by
displaying a banner reading 350.

P.E.T.E and Hills Horizon have joined the international goal of reducing the carbon
dioxide level down to 350. Currently the carbon levels are at 390 parts per million but
research endorsed by 40 leading environment scientists states that 350 parts per million
is the most carbon dioxide we can safely have in the atmosphere. The increasing
numbers have brought concern to many around the world. In 2007 founders of 350 and
other groups supporting this cause organized over 2,000 rallies in all 50 states. Past
rallies influenced many political leaders to commit to decreasing carbon dioxide
emissions 80 percent by 2050. Our best chance to speed up that process will take place
December in Copenhagen, when the world’s nations meet to agree on a new climate
treaty. Copenhagen well be the pivotal moment that determines whether or not we get
the planet out of the climate crisis, participating in the Spearfish 350 Climate
Celebration will be a big step for awareness.

The Spearfish 350 Climate Celebration will represent the people around the globe
fighting to stop climate change and help remake the world.
