- 1. Julie Roseblade pfeNews Friday 13 March 2015 pf:achievement Congratulations: to Holly Denham, Ashley Davies and Sinead Kay who were all selected to play at the weekend for the Surrey U17s. Their team drew 3-3 with Oxfordshire. Well done girls! Head’s Commendation to: Helena Traill for helping with 3G's board and for the huge support given to her form on a daily basis Congratulations: to Erin Saunders who was part of the Surrey Netball squad last Saturday at the sold-out 6,000 spectator game with Surrey Storm vs Hertfordshire Mavericks at the Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park. It was a closely fought game until mid-way, but Surrey Storm came through to beat the Mavericks 55-42 in a fast and furious match. Erin was invited to be ballgirl and was court-side for the whole match. The Storm team awarded her and another ball girl a signed netball from the team’s players. Dear Parent, This week we received some very good news from Guildford Borough Council: our application for a new music, science and technology centre has been approved. This is Phase 1 of the school’s 10 year development plan and will provide us with wonderful new facilities, including an 80 seat recital hall, music teaching and instrumental rooms, a recording studio, additional science labs, a new DT workshop and Food Technology room. We will be using the footprint of the existing music block to create a three storey building which will also extend into the science centre. We are absolutely delighted that consent was unanimous and that no unforeseen conditions were imposed! Finally, we are just a week away from the Big Event and I would like to thank everyone who has helped with this huge project. We are all looking forward to a wonderful evening.
- 2. pf:environment day PF Environment Day: Ms Treanor reports: Thursday was PF’s Environment Day. The aim was to raise awareness of climate change and celebrate the work that has been done so far towards our EcoSchool status. The day began with the WWF’s Earth Hour video and everyone making pledges to show that they have the power to make changes towards being more sustainable. The Malteser challenge and cake sale at break time raised money for Fair Trade and Comic Relief, while more house points were on offer for clean plates at lunchtime. Seeing bananas, lions, pandas, polar bears and even an ostrich wandering round school has hopefully made everyone more aware of the need to act! Please show your support at home by participating in the WWF’s Earth Hour which is on Saturday 28 March.
- 3. pf:book week Book Week: Mrs Hilliam reports: The Prior’s Field Book week has seen a plethora of literary activities to focus attention on the importance of storytelling and reading for enjoyment. The week began with Mr Sapseid telling a riveting adventure story in assembly with a musical accompaniment from Mr Butler adding an atmospheric touch. Mr Butler has again produced a fiendishly challenging literary quiz for the girls and staff to test their literary knowledge. This week has seen a half-price book sale in the library where a staggering £614.43 worth of books were sold. On this occasion the school did not receive any commission but the girls were able to benefit by buying books with a 50% discount. We also had a bookmark making workshop in the library on Wednesday and all week, we have been growing our very own literary tree in the library with the girls providing the leaves and the staff the red apples with details of current reading books. On Tuesday the lower school was treated to a visit by the actor and storyteller Bob Cryer, who also found time to give a workshop to the sixth form. Thank you to all the girls, parents and staff for their wonderful support for this week’s activities. We have also run our first ever literary baking competition and have received some stunning entries from the girls, including Harry Potter Cupcakes (from Daisy Evans), Alice in Wonderland Queen of Hearts cakes (from Kariella Keane) and a very clever Smurf toadstall house (by Stephanie Barker).
- 4. pf:sixth Sixth Form News: Mrs Barlow reports: On Thursday evening all the boarders gathered in the Sixth Form common room after supper for a talk led by our very own Miss Watt on 'Sailing around the world at 18'. When Miss Watt was only 18 years old she embarked on a journey that would see her travel to every continent in the world, meet new people and experience new cultures along the way! She took us on a journey that spanned the globe as we embarked with 'Team Finland' on a 68ft Clipper yacht that was her home for almost the entire year! The boarders thoroughly enjoyed listening to Miss Watt's tales of sharing a yacht with 18 strangers, shaving her hair off for a dare and buying £500 worth of chocolate in one shop! The talk was informative, fun and full of adventure! It had the boarders gripped from start to finish!! When it was over the girls were full of questions for Miss Watt and they left inspired about what you can achieve in life when you follow your dreams!! Biology Trip: Saskia Lawrence reports: This week the lower sixth biologists went to the zoo for an absolutely fantastic day! We had a lecture about the conservation work of the zoo in protecting endangered species. We learned about captive breeding programs for tigers and met a corn snake. We then walked around the rest of the zoo where we observed the success of said captive breeding programs. We enjoyed seeing the giraffes and Jay Jay the tiger during his husbandry management training. It was a great day out and really useful for our A Level course! pf:biology
- 5. pf:story telling pf:boarding Boarding News: Miss Brailey reports: What another busy week it has been for the PF boarders: Big Event rehearsals, gymnastics practice, lower school play run-throughs as well as all of the regular clubs, activities and interests outside of lessons. On Friday night, it was high time to rest and relax, so the girls had a beauty night. They made homemade face masks and painted their nails whilst watching a film in the boarding office. On Saturday, we awoke to beautiful spring sunshine, so the girls took full advantage of the weather and walked with Mrs Picken into Godalming. Saturday evening was spent relaxing with Miss Andrews. On Sunday the girls were able to sleep in and have a leisurely brunch, including particularly delicious scrambled eggs (thanks catering) before heading off to Airhop Trampoline Park in Guildford. Airhop seems to be the latest trend in Surrey, with tickets having to be booked months in advance. For a whole hour the girls bounced, hopped and jumped themselves off the walls, floors and into foam pits – they were definitely tired and ready for a drink in the upstairs café afterwards. In the afternoon we came back to PF to recuperate, before enjoying the traditional Sunday roast and getting ready for the week ahead. Storytelling: Mr Sapseid reports: On Tuesday, well-known actor and master storyteller, Bob Cryer, introduced lower school students to the magic of storytelling. His unique take on a Grimm fairy-tale was wonderfully entertaining, and the students were coaxed into the action and kept spellbound. He encouraged the girls to take imaginative flight and inhabit new worlds where their own sensory stories can unfold. The English department is running a StorySlam for the lower school and we expect to be regaled with a variety of riveting yarns over the next two weeks. A number of stories will make it through to the Grand Final which will be held in the Hall during the last week of term.

- 7. pf:art Congratulations to Old Girls Daisy and Holly and to the Prior’s Field Art Department for a fabulous achievement: Mrs Russell reports: 56 NADFAS Societies across the country entered 368 pieces of A level work in the NADFAS/Royal Society of British Artists, RBA, competition and just 22 works were chosen to be exhibited in the RBA's annual show. The chosen artists were awarded the title, RBA Scholar 2015. The girls' work, produced whilst they were students at Prior’s Field, hangs in the wonderful Mall Gallery space, alongside many of Britian's best living, working, professional artists many of whom exhibit in galleries not only around London but the world. The girls should take great pride in their achievement in simply making the 'final cut'. Guildford Evening DFAS (your local branch of NADFAS) paid for the framing of Holly's painting for the exhibition, have presented both girls with Affiliate Membership of GEDFAS and awarded each of them with a £25 prize in recognition of their achievement. In addition, for the RBA, both girls’ work stood out from the rest of the Young Artists’ work on show. (Those artists under the age of 25- including RBA degree student award winners!) and the girls won additional RBA awards. Holly won one of ten Windsor & Newton painting prizes and Daisy, the prestigious Arts Club Charitable Trust Award (in association with The Arts Club, award for a Young Artist) with prize monies of £250, as well as, one of ten Michael Harding painting awards. I spoke with the RBA Vice President, Mick Davies, this morning. He was thrilled with the girls’ work, hopes that they continue to nurture their artistic talents into the future and that he will see their work hanging at future RBA exhibitions as working artists. He sends his congratulations and thanks to the Art Department Team which has encouraged and developed the girls' talents thus far. I do hope you will all find the time to visit the exhibition. It runs until the 21st March. I'm sure if you go you will realise just what an achievement this has been and that the quality of the Prior’s Field Art Department's output ranks with the best of Britain! - 8. pf:sports Sporting News: Miss Scott reports: It has been a very busy week for Prior’s Field sport, starting with last Friday’s U12 A & B Surrey Hockey Tournament: The A team played St. George’s first, losing 3-0. Second was Lingfield a 3-0 win, followed by Wimbledon and 4-0 win. As the tournament progressed, the team started to pass the ball well and scored some lovely goals. Sascha Hewson was particularly strong in the midfield. The girls reached the final, meeting St. George’s again and losing 6-1. The girls were very happy with their silver medals and are now motivated to work hard for next season. Sasha Hewson was player of the match. The B team played two games because other teams had withdrawn. Firstly, Lingfield B drawing 0-0 and then Danes Hill losing 1-0. They dominated both games heavily but struggled to score. Emma Hutchings was player of the match. Saturday 7 March What a change to have such a lovely morning for sport! We hosted a hockey and netball fixture v Woldingham. Unfortunately, there were no wins for the U16 and U15 A and B teams. A big thank you to all the girls who played up into the teams to make this fixture possible. Players of the match were U16, Lara Martin; U15A, Rebecca Dore; U15B shared between Holly Squires and Maddie Boon. The U14 Hockey team beat Woldingham 2-1. The girls were asked to play different tactics and they managed the challenge well, delivering a strong team performance. Alice O’Hagan was player of the match. The U14Bs also beat Woldingham 3-0. Considering this is the first time the team had played together, as a combined U13 A and U14 B, they gelled well, especially in the second half after weathering a lot of pressure in the first half. Monday 9 March The 1st Hockey team played Sir William Perkins’ School winning 3-1. Their best player was the GK who made some wonder saves. PF had a strong first half. The second half was less dynamic but good enough to take a win against a good team towards the end of the season. We were missing Hannah Knights through injury, but her support on the side line was enough to see the team through! Grace Richardson was player of the match. Tuesday 10 March The U18 netball team played Charterhouse, winning 21 – 7 with Kelly McCall as player of the match. The U15 hockey team played Duke of Kent. We were 3-0 up in about 5 minutes and 7 -0 by half time. The girls played really well, trying out different positions on the pitch. The second half was closer with Emily Baker our GK, playing for the opposition. She kept the score at 7-0.
- 9. pf:sport contd. Wednesday 11 March The PE department hosted a Prep Schools’ Gymnastic Competition during the afternoon with 100 girls from 8 different schools performing set sequences. It was a lovely afternoon, seeing some excellent gymnasts. Claremont brought their U14A&B and U15A&B netball teams after school. The U14 A won 19-4, totally outplaying their opposition through great teamwork and communication on court. The shooters were unstoppable, scoring almost every shot they took. Player of the match was Anja Atkin. The U14 B won 16-0! Cat Leach played a fantastic game as GK, a completely different position to the normal one. Ella Redbond dominated the entire game in the centre court and Eliza Austin’s and Emily Chamberlain’s (who stepped in last minute to play- what a hero!) shooting was on fire!! Player of the match was Ella Redbond. The U15A and B team had the full complement of team players for the first time in a number of fixtures which gave a real lift to the team. The A team played a really good match but lost 22-12. The B team won 14-7 with fast, hard, flat passing. Players of the fixture were Zara Freeman and Georgia Chilvers. The 1st Hockey team played their final match of the season, with many scoring opportunities. However, the opposition GK played well. PF won 1-0, with Holly Morganti scoring. Erin Saunders was a superb player of the match. Thursday 12 March The U13 A hockey team played in the Surrey Tournament at Cranleigh. After a slow start, drawing 0-0 with Nonsuch, the team was given a specific point to focus on for each game. As their confidence grew they improved, drawing 1-1 against Woldingham who were a good side. The girls won 1-0 against Lingfield and drew 0-0 against Tormead A. It was a really positive experience for the team with such great improvements. It was disappointing to narrowly miss out on a place in the semi final. The U14 team played against St Peter’s on Thursday, winning 7-1. The goal highlights were Alice O Hagan scoring a cracking goal from her reverse and a text book piece of play from Maya Payne, running down the right wing to the base line and crossing to Lara Benkert to tap in. - 10. TUESDAY 24TH MARCH 2015 MIKKI AUSTIN NETBALL COACHING Surrey Storm player, Mikki Austin, will be coming in to Priors Field School for coaching sessions. The first team player, Mikki Austin who players Centre for Surrey Storm, will deliver three training sessions. Each session will have specific drills to develop player’s individual skills and progress their game play. When is your session?
