Pulmonary function tests evaluate lung function and include spirometry, tests of lung volumes like helium dilution and plethysmography, diffusing capacity tests, arterial blood gas analysis, and exercise tests like the 6-minute walk test. Other measures include forced expiratory flows, peak expiratory flow rate, minute ventilation, maximum breathing capacity, breathing reserve, and tests to evaluate dyspnea. Arterial blood gases are measured through indwelling catheters or arterial puncture with samples placed on ice and analyzed using miniature glass electrodes.
