- 1. Before teaching children the written form of letters (graphemes), it is important that they have developed good auditory discrimination skills. One of the most important pre-reading skills that children need is the ability to hear and isolate the initial sound in words. Hearing what a word begins with can be a challenge for young children and lots of practise is needed to help them acquire this skill. Below are some fun ideas that will help your child to do this.
