Before teaching children the written form of letters (graphemes), it is important that they have developed
good auditory discrimination skills. One of the most important pre-reading skills that children need is the
ability to hear and isolate the initial sound in words. Hearing what a word begins with can be a challenge
for young children and lots of practise is needed to help them acquire this skill. Below are some fun ideas
that will help your child to do this. Please let us know how you feel your child is progressing with this skill
