Phase 3:
Design Process and Interactive Prototype
By: Laura and Roxy
What we will cover:
•Problem definition and the aims and goals of our
project
•Design process
•User research findings (Our users wanted…
•Users and persona integration
•Design concept
•Original design vs final design
•Benefits to users
Problem Definition
Facebook is the devil!
“ I keep on getting distracted when I’m on the internet”
I can never get any work done with everyone
chatting to me over msn…
Why does it always feel like a chore to
add to my blog
I have so many tabs open with all my social networking
sites that my browser keeps crashing.
I have no self control… I need to look at trashy
photos of my friends mid essay…
Problem Definition
• These cries are the problems we wanted to answer.
• We wanted to revolutionise the way students work,
study and play on the internet.
• We wanted to make it quick, simple and easy for users to
perform simple every day tasks from the browser
supporting both work and social tasks separately-
allowing for more quality time for other web activities.
• Overall our aim for this project is to increase efficiency
through the organisation of web functions activities that
support student online and offline activities.
• A browser of the
students
• For the students
• By the students
Design Process
brainstorming
sketching
wire framing
prototyping
• Everyone in this room
• all students (high school to tertiary)
• May be utilised to a broader market including staff and
teachers.
User Personas
Our Users
The user persona that we chose to
base our project on was seventeen
year old Amie Pond.
As a basis of most of preliminary
research, she best suited the target
audience that could most benefit
from our project, due to their high
study and social demands.
So what do your feel doing today?
In our project users have the choice to choose from two ‘modes’: study and social mode.
Our concept: The ‘mode’ factor
Study Social
Study mode is activated when users wish to focus on work
related tasks, and focus web activities around the task to be
completed. Such activities include:
- Researching online catalogues and websites,
- Visiting core websites for task related information
(e.g. university site)
- General Information searches,
- Use of Online Collaboration tools
- Open Office sites.
In study mode, users are greeted with a side menu bar that
contains current browser functions plus specialised functions
that assist the users work related tasks.
Our Concept: Study mode
Study
Figure 1: Study mode process
Our Concept: Social mode
SocialSocial mode is activated when users wish to focus on
leisure activities rather than study/work related tasks, and
focus web activities around social and personal interests.
In social mode, users are greeted with a side menu bar
similar to study mode, but contains integrated social
networking functions, e.g. photo sharing, to allow users to
keep track of all their user profiles from the browser.
Social mode enables users to manage their online social
profiles as well as organise their offline social events- with
the browser created to become the users own “personal
organiser” with a event function integrating calendar
features with online social networking events.
Figure 2: Social mode process
The benefits:
Different modes provide a different environment to work or play in,
allowing the user to have control in which activities they want to focus
on, without the temptation of the other.
Ability to have different function/sites nearby to suit different
activities. E.g. able to have activity specific bookmarked icons in study
mode and social mode that are not needed in the other- e.g. have world
of war craft in social mode but it the icon is a hindrance for study
activities, so is replaced by the uni website in study mode.
Different mode= different frame of mind
User becomes more focused on the task ahead.
Clean, simple and easy to use- very straight forward.
Does not incorporate tabs, all functions can be used on any page
the user is on.
Provides easy links the networks you like most, in relation to the
function you want to perform. E.g. album button will link to the
album on the social site.
Have we convinced you yet…
