Photoshoot for poster.

What I wanted...
When I first started my photo-shoot I had in mind the image I would
like to have and so to start off I made sure that the clothing was in
accordance to the colours of the iconic tea cup. I took around 100
images and then decided on four possible images which showed
different positions I used. All of my images are face on images as I
knew I wanted a face on close up which is why there is very little
experimentation with angles. I had a makeup artist training at the
college to come in and help me with the application of the fake cut.
She used FX make up wax and fake blood to produce the small cut
on his cheek. In the below pictures I used four lights to try and get
bright lighting with correct shadows. However, when I uploaded the
images I believe that the lighting is far too bright and I wanted a less
colourful image with darker reds and burgundy’s. Also a lot of my
shadows were out of line so if i was to do this shoot again I would
use three point lighting which would eliminate all shadows.
Therefore, in the editing process I need to lower the saturation and
make the image darker to give it the more mysterious effect I was
looking for.
This was the first position I tried
when shooting, from this face
on angle you can see the cut on
his face and all of the colours
work well together, the lighting
is just to bright as said earlier.
The eyes are in the image which
I do not like but I can easily crop
out in the editing process.
Originally I wanted the tea cup
to be positioned slightly over his
mouth but as I was taking
images I decided that this
covered too many facial features
that I wanted to be defined in
the image. As I planned it to be a
close up image I didn’t want to
retract from features and I
believed that the shape of the
mouth could say a lot about the
character.
Because of what I decided
about the mug in the previous
image, I decided to move the
tea cup away from the face
and have a half smiling and
mysterious grin on the models
face to show cheekiness, and
this accompanied by the cut
on his face makes him look
intriguing. I wanted to cup to
be in focus and I managed to
do this my adjusting the
aperture and shutter speed on
the camera, enabling the
background to blur slightly. I
liked this image but was not
fond of the crinkled shit, out of
alignment buttons and shadow
on the shirt so I plan to change
all of this in Photoshop.
Next I tried to include
the saucer for the cup
but id didn’t like how
this worked out. I don’t
like how I decided to blur
the cup and focus on the
character, I liked it better
the other way round
because it added
mystery. The model
looked uncomfortable
and I don’t believe that it
added the same impact
that the above picture
did.
Finally I wanted to
see what the image
would look like if I
decided to do a
landscape poster,
but when I started
shooting landscape I
decided that
because I wanted to
impact of a close up.
A close up image would highlight the tea cup and emotional features; a
landscape image wouldn’t work because it did not give the same effect.
Although the black background contrasts well and I could have placed the
text in here, it just didn’t have the same impact I was looking for and if I
was to do a horizontal poster I would probably change my stylistic ideas.
Overall...
I believe that the second image is my favourite
because the positioning of the model is exactly how
I want it. The tea cup is correctly in focus more than
the rest of the image to add the sense of unknown
which I was looking for and which is reinforced by
the removal of the upper facial features. I also like
the expression on the models face and the way that
it is not covered up by any props yet he still looks
comfortable. The issues I am going to face are the
removal of the out of alignment buttons and the
shadow but I plan to be able to work that out in the
editing process on Photoshop.
