A Phrase is a combination of two or more words that make sense but do
not complete sense. A phrase cannot stand alone as a clause or a
sentence because it contains neither a subject nor a verb. Usually,
phrases are used as a component of clauses.
Example:
Phrase: "on the table" (prepositional phrase)
Not a Phrase: "The book is on the table." (This is a clause because it
has a subject and a verb.)

1) Noun Phrase

Types of Phrases ?
A noun phrase consists of a noun and its
modifiers, functioning as a subject, object, or
complement in a sentence.
Example:
The big brown dog barked loudly.
Phrase: "The big brown dog" (Noun Phrase)
1. Noun Phrase
A verb phrase includes the main verb and its
auxiliaries (helping verbs) or modifiers, expressing
an action or state.
Example:
She has been singing beautifully all evening.
Phrase: "has been singing beautifully" (Verb
Phrase)
2. Verb Phrase
A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition
and ends with the object of the preposition, often
acting as an adjective or adverb.
Example:
The cat jumped onto the table.
Phrase: "onto the table" (Prepositional Phrase)
3. Prepositional Phrase
A gerund phrase starts with a gerund (verb
ending in -ing) and acts as a noun in the
sentence.
Example:
Swimming in the ocean is very relaxing.
Phrase: "Swimming in the ocean" (Gerund
Phrase)
4. Gerund Phrase
An infinitive phrase begins with "to" followed by
the base form of a verb, often functioning as a
noun, adjective, or adverb.
Example:
He wants to travel around the world.
Phrase: "to travel around the world" (Infinitive
Phrase)
5. Infinitive Phrase
A participial phrase includes a participle (present
or past) and its modifiers, functioning as an
adjective to describe a noun.
Example:
Shivering with cold, she wrapped herself in a
blanket.
Phrase: "Shivering with cold" (Participial Phrase)
6. Participial Phrase
An appositive phrase renames or provides
additional information about a noun, usually
placed next to it.
Example:
My brother, a skilled carpenter, built this table.
Phrase: "a skilled carpenter" (Appositive Phrase)
7. Appositive Phrase
An absolute phrase combines a noun and a participle,
often providing extra information about the sentence
as a whole. It does not directly modify a specific word.
Example:
Her arms folded across her chest, she stared at the
screen.
Phrase: "Her arms folded across her chest" (Absolute
Phrase)
8. Absolute Phrase
An absolute phrase combines a noun and a participle,
often providing extra information about the sentence
as a whole. It does not directly modify a specific word.
Example:
Her arms folded across her chest, she stared at the
screen.
