Chapter 4- Lesson 5
Weather-Related Risks

 Hot Weather-Related Risks
 Dehydration- excessive loss of water
      from the body
     Poor air quality
Hot Weather-Related Risks

 Overexertion
     Overworking the body
 Heat exhaustion
 Overheating the body that results in
cold, clammy skin and symptoms of
      shock
 Caused by overexertion in a hot,
      humid atmosphere
Hot Weather-Related Risks

 Heat cramps
 Muscle spasms that result from a loss
of large amounts of salt and water
        through perspiration
Hot Weather-Related Risks

 Heatstroke
 A condition in which the body loses
the ability to rid itself of excessive heat
      through perspiration
     Causes hyperthermia (increase in
      body temperature)
 May have difficulty breathing or may
      suddenly collapse
Cold-Weather Health Risks

 Wear 3 layers of clothing
 Make sure the layers keep out
        moisture
 70% of the body’s heat is lost through
the head, so a hat is a must
 Frostbite and hypothermia are two
specific health risks to keep in mind
Cold-Weather Health Risks
 Frostbite
 A condition that results when body tissues
        become frozen
     Cover all exposed skin
         • Ears, face, feet, and fingers
 An early sign of frostbite is frostnip
         • A whitening of the skin of the toes, fingers, nose,
           or ears
 Go indoors immediately if any area of the
body has a lack of feeling due to the weather
Cold-Weather Health Risks

 Hypothermia
 A condition in which body temperature
      becomes dangerously low
 Body loses the ability to warm itself
 As body temperature drops, the brain
      cannot function and body systems
      begin to shut down
Minor Injuries
 Muscle cramp
 Spasm or sudden tightening of a muscle
 Happens when a muscle is tired,
        overworked, or dehydrated
 Strain
 Condition resulting in damaging a muscle or
        a tendon
 Sprain
 An injury to the ligament surrounding the
        joint
Major Injuries

 Fractures and Dislocations
 Tendonitis

 Concussions
Homework
 Pg 106 and 107
 Exploring Health Terms
     1-9 & 13-15
 Recalling the Facts
     1-10
 All in complete sentences!!!
 Due Tomorrow!!
 TEST TOMORROW!!
     Chapter 4- Lessons 1, 2, 3, and 5
