Through their Saved by the Dogs initiative, the not-for-profit animal rescue organisation Tears and sponsor Hills Pet Nutrition are bringing a number of wet-nosed superheroes to the Company’s Garden this week, and the outing could just be the perfect cup of chicken soup for your soul. We chat to Luke Kruyt, operations manager: Saved By the Dogs, to find out more about this special playdate. Howdidthisidea comeabout? Saved by the Dogs is a Tears Animal Rescue and Hill’s initiative inspired by the Human Walking Programme, an event hosted by the Australian shelter, the Lost Dogs Home. The goal of the project is to change people’s perception of rescue dogs: rather than unwanted castaways, our pooches are superheroes in the making who can transform your life through love and companionship. Whatsortofresponse hastheinitiative received? It’s been great for creating awareness around rescue dogs and is helping to bring the concept of “opt to adopt” to fruition. All our four-legged superheroes at Saved by the Dogs relish the extra love and attention and effortlessly transform the city worker’s days from dull and dreary into upbeat, furry fun. Fallows spoke about the unforgettable moments of his career, including coming face to face with three lionesses, and diving with some of the world’s largest great whites in New Zealand. His stories were both moving and inspiring. The talk was followed by a scrumptious buffet dinner at Reuben’s. The series runs until October and the line-up is amazing. Don’t miss out! Besides celebrating our local hero Reuben Riffel – who is one of the nicest guys to chat to – this dinner series allows you to get up close with some W hen it comes to heading out on a chilly night, I’m not usually the first to rush out the door, unless there’s something really special lined up. So with a lick of crimson lipstick and heels to match, I decided to go in search of something new to do in the city and discovered two stylish events at One&Only Cape Town that will liven up even the coldest of weeks. One&OnlyGuestSpeaker Series2015 I had heard about this fascinating concept of various conservationists giving talks on their adventures, but actually sitting and listening to Chris Fallows (my personal favourite, as he has a keen interest in sharks) was incredible. It’s a real escape to hear stories about the wild. He supported his tales of the Western Cape’s other top chefs too. The evening I attended saw Michael Cooke, executive chef: Camphors at Vergelegen, showcasing his five-star dishes, which were paired with the famous estate’s ultra- smooth Vergelegen wines. The dinner was a vibrant affair, with laughter certainly adding to the overall warmth of the night. The focus was on local produce. Hearing the chefs talk about their styles and what food means to them was a rare experience. My favourite dish was the Rooted in the Earth salad – beetroot, hibiscus and fig. There’s a smart line-up of chefs to choose from, and I can imagine wanting to attend more than one Reuben Invites. It turns out that braving the cold has its rewards after all.
