To what extent is plastic surgery necessary?
Areas of interaction
What is plastic surgery?
• medical concerned with the correction of form
and function
• includes many types of reconstructive surgery,
hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment
of burns
• plastic surgeon uses cosmetic surgical
principles
• Special skill and knowledge needed to be
plastic surgeon…
(to achieve problem resolution and patient
satisfaction)
• Repair skin damages
• Self esteem and confidence
• Successful in life and more opportunities
• Accepted by society
• Positive effect of person’s psychological health
• Feel comfortable in company
• Risk of infection, blood clotting etc.
• Unsatisfactory results
• Expensive
• Causes undue stress on the body
• Long time spent on recovery. Have to sacrifice
part of daily routines

Example 1: Michael Jackson
• 10 plastic surgery procedures
• Deformation of face
Example 2: Jocelyn Wildenstein
• Spent 4 million dollars on plastic surgery
• Became addicted
Example 3: Katie Piper
• Plastic surgery after getting sulphuric acid spilt
over her face
• All skin was removed from her face
Religion in plastic surgery
• Muslim: It is understood that surgery isn’t
allowed, on the basis that it permanently changes
the body God created and gave as a “trust.”
• Catholic: doesn’t directly address the subject. If
the procedure is not for something considered
immoral by the Church (such as gender-
reassignment surgery), then “elective plastic
surgery is left to the prudent choice of those
involved”
• Buddhist: see plastic surgery as an “offense”
and ethics of plastic surgery
• Body dimorphic disorder (BDD)
