Phillips PMD presentation -- Oregon Board of Pharmacy -- April 17th, 2013
Medication non-adherence is a costly
problem for the U.S. healthcare system:

• annual costs of well over $300 billion per year in the U.S. alone
• 1 in 10 hospital admissions of seniors due to medication misuse
• 40% of nursing home admissions associated with non-adherence

Additional medication safety issues put
seniors at higher risk:

• seniors more likely to take multiple medications
• medication regimen becomes more complicated / complex
• other factors (i.e. cognitive function) lead to adverse drug events

Phillips PMD presentation -- Oregon Board of Pharmacy -- April 17th, 2013
Pharmacists need to be involved:
• Studies show pharmacy medication adherence
programs can improve Rx regimen compliance from
below 60% to 97% or more with increased patient safety.

• Improved compliance leads to improved disease state
management - i.e. reduced BP, LDL, A1C, etc.

• Reduced risk factors results in reduced healthcare
costs and improved patient outcomes.

• The technology to improve Rx compliance is available
to pharmacists today.

Medication Adherence Devices:
The Big Picture
The FDA approved Phillips PMD Medication
Dispensing System has a long track record of
improving medication safety and boosting Rx med
compliance to nearly 99% among registered users.

But there are many other new medication adherence
devices available today. And more products are
currently being developed and brought to market.

Transitions in Pharmacy and Healthcare:
Technology is rapidly transforming healthcare

ACOs, CCOs, PCPCH, all provide new opportunities for
pharmacists to utilize this new technology for improving
patient Rx compliance and safety, thus
improving patient lives and saving healthcare dollars.

Oregon BOP rules need to allow pharmacists to
participate in programs utilizing this technology designed
to improve medication delivery, Rx
adherence/compliance, patient safety, etc.

Pharmacists should allowed to take the lead role as
medication adherence specialists!
