Editor's Notes

  • #3: Obesity is a huge epidemic that is becoming widespread across the whole of the United States. All throughout the country in one way shape or form there is someone affected by obesity. Adults and children are likewise affected, adults more than children. According to the US News “Every state in the U.S. has more than 20% of adults with obesity, according to the CDC – a significant uptick since 1985, when no state had an obesity rate higher than 15%. Certain states have higher rates than others: there are more obese people living in the South (32.4%) and Midwest (32.3%) than in other parts of the country.”
  • #4: In the United States both adults and children are affected by obesity. A statistic US New says that “from Nearly 40% of all adults over the age of 20 in the U.S. – about 93.3 million people – are currently obese, according to data published in JAMA in 2018.” This really stresses upon on the idea that Obesity is an issue that affects millions of individuals all over the country and is greatly growing all over the country. People of different groups and backgrounds are all afflicted by obesity and it has yet to slow down.
  • #5: Childhood is affecting young Americans at an exponential rate that is to this day continually growing. The NPR brought up the idea that “...at least 340 million adolescents worldwide between ages 5-19, and 40 million children under age 5, have been classified as overweight… the U.S. is near the top of the list, with a rate of adolescent overweight around 42%.” People who have bad or unhealthy eating habits as children tend to grow up into with the same habits which leads to adulthood obesity.
  • #6: In terms of financial speaking, it is actually much more expensive to live as a person who is obese. The US News brings up a statistic from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that says that “the estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical cost for people who have obesity was $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.” Part of this comes from the fact that most Americans purchase fast food.
  • #7: An article from CNN Health brough up the idea there is a trend between obesity. CNN Health said that “...researchers found the mothers of only children were more likely to be overweight themselves.” This stresses the idea that children learn habits from their parents or guardians. Therefore if a parent has unhealthy eating habits of their own, it will more or less be learned by the child as well.
  • #8: While obesity is a growing issue that is on the rise, the whole opposite side of the spectrum is malnutrition. Malnutrition is a affliction that mostly affects a person in their diet of not getting the necessary nutrients. The Guardian brought about a very big statistic that shows the depth of malnutrition which is that “Some 85% of Americans lack essential vitamins”. Almost 100 percent of all people in the United States lack what their body needs to have a healthy diet which is very much alarming. There is an issue going in this country where there is enough of food, but that food is not necessarily healthy for optimal health. The Guardian further says that “more than half of American children do not get enough of vitamins D and E, while more than a quarter do not get enough calcium, magnesium or vitamin A.” This issue of malnutrition is not just affecting adults, but children as well who are not getting the nutrients they need to grow healthy.
  • #9: Children are being affected by the rate of obesity as well as malnutrition. The NewFoodEconomy said that “The World Obesity Federation forecasted that 254 million children between the ages of 5 and 19 would be obese by 2030….Globally, at least 1 in 3 children is not growing well due to malnutrition. At least 1 in 2 suffers from hidden hunger due to deficiencies in essential nutrients.” Children are either being fed in such a way that they are either becoming unhealthily overweight or they are not getting the daily nutrition that they need. As a result, childhood obesity really is on the rise and a lack of nutrition is prevalent. The lack of nutrition is directly affecting the growth of children negatively, which is horrible in itself.
