Example 1
Leslie sat in front of Paul. She had two long, brown pigtails
that reached all the way down to her waist. Paul saw those
pigtails, and a terrible urge came over him. He wanted to
pull a pigtail. He wanted to wrap his fist around it, feel
the hair between his fingers, and just yank. He thought it
would be fun to tie the pigtails together, or better yet, tie
them to her chair. But most of all, he just wanted to pull
one.
Sideways Stories from Wayside School
by Louis Sachar
Example 2
Sixty seconds. That's how long we're required to stand on our
metal circles before the sound of a gong releases us. Step off
before the minute is up, and land mines blow your legs off.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Example 3
The voice was growing fainter. Harry was sure it was moving away - moving
upward. A mixture of fear and excitement gripped him as he stared at the dark
ceiling; how could it be moving upward? Was it a phantom, to whom stone ceilings
didn't matter?
"This way," he shouted, and he began to run, up the stairs, into the entrance hall.
It was no good hoping to hear anything here, the babble of talk from the
Halloween feast was echoing out of the Great Hall. Harry sprinted up the marble
staircase to the first floor, Ron and Hermione clattering behind him.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling
Example 4
Dave sat up on his surfboard and looked towards the shore. Two people, John and Brian,
were paddling up to the line up. “Nice day,” Dave said.
Dave looked out to the shoulder, a look of worry on his face. John was afraid of the shallow
reef in the impact zone, and tended to avoid the peak in these situations. However, at this
particular spot, even though the waves were smaller out in the shoulder, the reef out there
was much shallower, and Dave worried about John wiping out after a take off. However,
Dave didn’t need to worry, as John had decided to brave the peak.
Example 5
And we scrounged. Next to survival, scrounge was probably the
most important word in our new vocabulary. We found a store
that was throwing out water-damaged mattresses. Getting them
home was a problem, since we had to make two trips, leaving
Brad and Katie, armed with sticks to guard over the remained.
I truly expected them to be challenged by some gang boss, but
they said that the only person who came by was a scrawny
little rat of a girl living alone. We let her have one of the
mattresses.
Invitation to the Game
by Monica Hughes
Example 6
I could not unlove him now, merely because I
found that he had ceased to notice me.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
