Overview
What is pollution
o pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause
adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise,
heat or light. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign
substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants
Types of pollution
• Air pollution
• Water pollution
• Noise pollution
• Land pollution
What is Air pollution
o Air pollution is the contamination of the natural air by mixing it with
different pollutants such as harmful fumes and chemicals. result in
breathing problems for living things.
Cause of air pollution
o Basically the air pollution is caused by the burning of fuel that directly releases
hazardous chemicals into the air.
o For example the burning of coal releases sulphur dioxide, a poisonous gas which is
responsible for acid rain.
o The sources of such chemicals are the large factories, smoke from the vehicles,
chimneys and burning of wood.
Effects of air pollution
o Air pollution causes depletion of the protective ozone layer. It also has dire health
effects on the individuals living on earth; it may cause respiratory problems, asthma,
lungs and heart diseases, etc. Air pollution also affects the cardiovascular system,
but the effects depend on the individual's exposure to the pollutants.
What is Water pollution
 Water pollution is the contamination of the water on Earth. It includes contamination
by pollutants such as chemical, bacterial or particulate that reduces the purity of the
water. Water pollution occurs in lakes, oceans, rivers and even underground reservoirs.
It can also reduce the amount of water that can be used for irrigation
Causes of water pollution
 just like air and soil pollution, water pollution is caused by the direct
incorporation of hazardous pollutants.
 The sources of these pollutants are yet again the large industries and
factories that dispose off their waste in lakes and ponds.
Effects of water pollution
 bout 40% of the deaths globally are accounted by water pollution.
Polluted water affects the flora and fauna of the sea organisms and these
organisms when consumed by humans, cause harmful diseases. Also, the
contamination of drinking water, which is produced from natural water
resources, causes diseases such as jaundice, cholera, or typhoid.
what IS Land pollution
 land pollution, also known as Soil pollution is the contamination of the soil or the land
that prevents growth of natural life, which includes land used for cultivating, wildlife
as well as habitation. Soil pollution can result in reduced growth of agriculture as well
as poisoning of the land and nearby water.
Cause of land pollution
 Soil pollution is mainly caused by the release of industrial waste. This waste
is directly incorporated into the soil by large industries and factories. Soil
pollution is also caused by human acts as mining and deforestation etc.
Effects of land pollution
 The agricultural capability of soil gets affected as a result of the land
pollution, making it infertile and unusable for farming purposes. Also,
it might result in the lowering of water table inside the ground.
WHAT IS Noise pollution
 Noise pollution is the loud noises that is created by human activity that disrupts the standard of
living in the affected area. Any noise that disrupts the ability of a person to perform can be termed
as noise pollution. This can result in temporary or permanent loss of hearing as well as
disturbances to wildlife.
Cause of noise pollution
 Noise pollution is caused by the moving vehicles, man made machines
and loud music. Other than that noise can be caused by anything, but
these three sources are the main reasons for the noise pollution around
us.
Effects of noise pollution
 the main problem that noise pollution, causes is that it affects the
physiological and psychological health of an individual who is exposed to the
excessive sound. Sometimes, it can even cause deafness and impaired hearing.
It also causes annoyance which might result on blood pressure variations,
ultimately leading to coronary diseases.
