Hong Kong’s Educational Context  Professional qualifications “all graduate, all trained” not yet a reality (dramatic increase over past decade)  Student allocation to schools [Band by ability both primary and secondary]  primary one to six  secondary one to five secondary six to seven Class sizes 30-40  Subvention non-secular  Primary education subject based  Specialized teaching (Chinese, English & Mathematics)  Medium of Instruction – English/Chinese
Definitions General Education :  It means that instruction which presents forms of expression, fields of knowledge, and methods of inquiry fundamental to intellectual growth and to a mature understanding of the world and the  human condition, as distinguished  from "specialized education," which prepares individuals for particular occupations or specific professional  responsibilities.
Definitions Professional education : The means that the structure is an education-oriented organization and management, to help educators and researchers enhancement of professional practice skills and the depth of research projects. The following three professionals usually encountered in education in the core curriculum.
Educational reforms Four interrelated areas of reform initiatives to meet global challenges of 21st century in “One Country, Two Systems”  Assessment reform – balancing assessment of and for learning; Systemic change and school improvement – coherence-making & devolution; Curriculum & learning reform – whole- person development & life-long learning; Accountability & quality assurance – driving continuous improvement
Thus…  Since 2000, reforms has been analyzed by multiple independent studies, consultations, continuous feedback.  Leading and managing change….  determine what students should learn (curriculum)  how school heads and teachers help students learn (pedagogy) know what students have learned (assessment)
Hong Kong’s advantages  Coherent curriculum with high expectations  Chinese culture values learning and provides extra incentives for students  Treasures the training of basic skills and the grasp of fundamental concepts at basic education level.  Teachers with strong pedagogical content knowledge  Other factors include  Societal expectation  Parental involvement  Learning behaviour  (time-on-task/structured teaching/homework)  Curriculum  Textbooks
However ,  the big Challenge is coming!
For instance: There is evidence suggesting that Chinese learners are relatively weaker in certain mathematics areas, in particular,  Data analysis  Statistics  Probability  In mathematics , Strength in computation is also a weakness;
