Poster Progression: Womenspace Donation Drive
Goal: The goal for this sign is to solicit donations for a drive benefitting Womenspace. The goal is also to appeal to students’
desire to feel connected to their community and to help those in need. I chose a modern style with angular text and graphics
to appeal to students because it is attractive to that demographic and consistent with other messaging that they see on a
regular basis.
Typefaces used: The font for the headline, subhead, and footer is United Sans Semi Extended in bold. The font for the middle
part of the sign is United Sans Semi Condensed, also bold. I chose to use variations of the same font family because the two
are different enough that the middle part doesn’t have the same angular feel as the top and bottom of the sign, but the
sections go well together and do not conflict.
Audience: The audience for this sign is Clark Honors College students at the University of Oregon. The sign uses style
elements that students are used to seeing in displays like this: a familiar font family, a familiar dimension, and a familiar tone
and writing style. The language in the sign is meant to connect with students and make them feel like the sign is addressing
them directly.
Message: There is a donation drive for Womenspace, and students in the Clark Honors College are invited to participate.
Participation will help those in need in the Eugene community, and doing so will help CHC students feel like part of their
community as well.
Initial Design
Redesign #1
Key Changes
Alignment: For this design, I chose to make the middle text into two columns. This allowed me to make the left column have
a larger font size, which helps it stand out.
Images: I removed the blue hearts and stuck with only one heart image for this sign, because the text realignment left little
room for more hearts.
Content: With this design, I narrowed the focus from a weeklong event to a specific part of the week: the donation drive. I
took out the part about card-making and snacks so that the sign could have one clear purpose, which was to solicit
donations for Womenspace.
Redesign #2
Key Changes
Alignment: For this design, I aligned the three questions in the middle part to the left, but I bumped everything in so that
the whole block of text (from the start of the first lines to the end of the last line) is centered In the middle part of the sign.
Images: I removed all of the hearts entirely, so that the sign could focus entirely on content.
Color: With this design, I added a dark bar to the top and bottom of the page. This allowed me to bring the informational
content from the original piece to the bottom, which left the middle open to showcase the main message of the sign. This
also added an element of repetition: light on dark background repeated at the top and bottom of the sign. I also muted the
red and blue colors so that they are more pink and light blue in order to create contrast between those colors and the dark
gray header and footer.
Redesign #3
Key Changes
Color: The key change in this version is that instead of the red and blue color scheme, I chose to go with a monochromatic
pink color scheme that includes three variations of the same color: one at 75%, one at 50%, and one at 15%. This color
change helps tie the design to the Valentine’s Day timing of the donation drive and the “spread the love” messaging at the
top.
Redesign #4
Key Changes
Alignment: Because I added an image, I moved the text for the middle part of the design over slightly so that the heart
graphic could balance the middle part of the design.
Images: I added a geometric heart image to enhance the “spread the love” message and help tie in the modern, angular
style that I was going for in this design. The colors of the heart go well with the monochromatic pink scheme for the type
colors and add additional colors to the design.
Type: With this design, I added an angular typeface to suggest a modern, geometric style.
Final Poster Design
Key Changes
Alignment: For the final design, I aligned all of the text to the left, including the header and footer. The only exception is the
last line of the middle section, which is intentionally offset for effect.
Type: With this design, I removed the script-like typeface and changed the top and bottom sections to an entirely angular
font in order to reflect the modern, geometric design. The middle section is from the same type family, but this version is
rounder and softer. This creates complementary type in the sign because they are similar enough that they don’t conflict,
but different enough that they stand out well from each other.
