• Since the inception of civilizations, migration has
been a continuous practice in places across the globe.
Population movement have gone on for thousands of
years and have had an important effect on the
distribution of people over the earth’s surface.
• Some population movements have been of a
voluntary nature (with people themselves choosing to
move), but in other cases people have been forced
against their will (e.g., the slave trade).
• With human migration, this is evidence in various
forms; for example, invasions, conquests, colonization
and immigration/emigration.
Population Movement - Migration: Definition, Types, Push and Pull Factors and Consequences
Permanent Migrations – This
involves people leaving their home
area with no intention of returning
to live there again.
Temporary Migrations – This
involves people leaving their home
area for a fairly short period of
time, and then going back to it.
E.g. Farm work etc.
– Internal migration
It includes the movements within the same
region, state, or country.
– External Migration
It constitutes migratory movements in
which people settle in another region, state,
or country different from the previous one.
– International migration
It happens when people move from one
country to another.
