Autumn typically begins around September 23rd each year as the Earth's axis tilts away from the sun, causing the sun's rays to be further from the Earth, leading temperatures to get colder. Fruit ripens in autumn as it is the end of the growing season and sunshine, while leaves change color as the chlorophyll that makes them green breaks down, leaving some leaves green and others turning brown or red depending on their chemical makeup before falling from the trees.

- 3. Why does it get colder The earth axis* is tilted by 23.5d. The earth moves round the sun. The suns rays are further away from the earth in autumn. *The axis is the line that connects the north pole to the south pole.
- 4. Why do fruit ripen in autumn? It ripens because it is the end of the sunshine.
- 5. Why do the leaves change colour Because the chlorophyll* goes away. *Chlorophyll is what makes leaves green.
- 6. Why some leaves are green and some are brown The brown leaves are made from the wastes. The red leaves are made from the glucose still trapped in the leaves.
