A Formula For Songwriting Minding your “M”s and “R”s
Brainstorming The first question we have to ask ourselves is, “what do I want my song to be about?”.  For the sake of this project lets say we are writing a song about  graduation . With one or two people at the board to put ideas in writing, class members call out lines and words that come to mind when they think about graduation. These lines do not have to be poetic just relevant to the subject.  That means everyone can contribute.  Memories live  on… Moving On… Saying goodbye
The 3 R’s of Lyric Writing R hythm- Making   the words fit rhythmically into the musical lines and the meter of the song R hyme- Making   the ideas fit together and flow poetically   R eason- Making   sure that your lyric is not just a senseless strain of rhyming words that have no real significance Some of the biggest  obstacles in song writing stem from a lack of consideration for these three elements of lyric writing
The 3 M’s of Music Writing Mood Movement Happy=Major Key Sad=Minor Key Fast and  Driving or Slow and flowing Meter 2/2 …3/4…4/4…2/4… 6/8…12/8…
Ideas  to  Lyrics Moving on to new things Sad to say goodbye Excited and scared Wondering what’s next I’ll miss my friends We’ll stay in touch I won’t forget you Where am I going? We’re moving on It won’t be long before we have to say goodbye Wondering what’s next, and how our time together really seemed to fly. We won’t forget all the memories we made here all these years But you can bet that we can’t leave it all behind without some tears
Putting It Together Now it’s time to take all of those poetic and rhythmic lines that you came up with as a group and put them to some music in the mood, meter and feel (movement) that was decided upon.  This can begin with a simple chord progression on piano or guitar and class members starting to sing lines that they hear over the chords. Be sure to have some kind of recording device running so as to not lose or forget good ideas that seem to catch on.  Before you know it you will have a complete song written by your class…a true creative collaboration!
