Editor's Notes

  • #2: Now that we have a good broad view of these networks, let’s talk about some specific ways that we can use these emerging technologies to create a compelling Personal Brand online. I am going to pick on myself for a second here to push this whole “personal brand’ point home. So I’m standing up here, speaking to all of you, and although nobody has fallen asleep yet, how memorable can I really hope to be? I can personally say that I don’t remember much about the dozens of speakers I have listened to, its mostly “That guy from blah blahblah” Right now, all I am is “that guy from brand-yourself.com” The beauty of social media and the interconnectedness and accessibility of information due to the internet is the fact that you can portray yourself as so more than “that person that works for said company” instead, you can paint a memorable picture about yourself that highlights the unique value you bring to the world, that is of course, if you know how to use these networks the right way. In a little bit, I am going to show you what my own “personal brand” looks like online and I am going to attempt to make you remember me as something more than “that guy from brand-yourself” But before I get into all that good stuff, Patrick and Trace are going to highlight the specific ways you can use the networks Professor Rotollo just mentioned.
  • #4: As evan pointed out, these social technologies are valuable tools that can help advance your career. It is important to think of these technologies as TOOLS rather than solutions. These pillars of career advancement have always been the same, these technologies are just making them faster and easier to manage than ever before.
  • #5: Let’s take our first point for example: Keeping up to date with industry news and trends. Needless to say this is an extremely important and beneifical for any professional in any industry. I’m going to show you how to using RSS feesd to organize and aggregate your content will save you time
  • #6: The first thing you need to do is set up a place where all your stories and blogs can go. The one I like to use is google reader because of its friendly interface.
  • #7: The great advantage of the web, it has opened us up to more informatino than ever before. Years ago people had to rely on limited sources for their info, but now informatino is free and plentiful. More choices is better.
  • #8: The disadvantage of reading content from a bunch of sources. It’s time Consuming and hard to keep track of. If you read 3 newssites and 5 blogs, you spend time each day visit9ing each site just to see if there is anyting new.
  • #9: The disadvantage of reading content from a bunch of sources. It’s time Consuming and hard to keep track of. If you read 3 newssites and 5 blogs, you spend time each day visit9ing each site just to see if there is anyting new.
  • #13: RSS gets its name because it makes your life simple. Instead of going out and looking for new infomratino yourself, and wasting time, it comes to you, in a single, easy to manage personal homepage. It’s home delivery for free.
  • #25: Welcome to the world of Facebook. Everything thinks they’re using but actually it is using them. They’re gathering up so much information on you, that they actually make money off of you. So why derive value from it? Everyone wants to be apart of “it” but what does that mean.
  • #26: These are some pretty monumental stats if you think about the sheer monstrosity that facebook has become.
  • #27: This helps you because you have the ability to become visible to over 200 million people. While you wont be friends with all of them, the ability to keep updated and interact like this is mind boggling. In the social media industry “Content is King.” Why? Because anything you post online is purely just content in one form or another that allows one of your friends to interact with you on another level. The great thing about the web is the inherit nature to congregate with other people who are into what you like. With over 200 million people, there are definitely a few people who enjoy what you like. The same goes with events, more than just interacting people you can actually MEET them in real life, which really solidified your connection, great way to network. Apps are just another way to meet people and enjoy things together. But most of all the internet allow you to be yourself. Some people act differntly in person than they do online which isnt a bad thing. They go hand in hand.
  • #28: First things first, your profile picture is online representation of you. If you want to create a professional profile it all starts with a great picture. It is human nature to make generalizations based on pictures, make sure you control those.
  • #29: Everyone thinks that being online is a popularity contest and that’s great if your trying to win a competition, but you’re not. You only want to be friends with people you have met and those who can advance your career. If someone asked you to introduce them to one of your friends to them but you replied back that you don’t actually know them, that looks bad for you. Choose your friends wisely. Also on a side note, think twice before friending your boss. It may seem like a nice gesture but it may not turn out so well.
  • #30: As I mentioned before, “Content is King.” An RSS feed to you facebook is a great way to show your friends what you interested in. I RSS our blog into my facebook so all my friends can read the content we produce. But you can also insert all the other social media sites that your hooked on.
  • #32: Welcome to the wonderful world of LinkedIn, the name says it all. This is a place for professionals to “link” to each other and make connections. You can think of it as a professional Facebook without all the bells and whistles.
  • #33: So these are the stats for Linkedin, they can be misleading so take them with a grain of salt. I boxed off the areas that I wanted to focus on. The average of a LinkedIn user is 41 and dropping. Can you guess why? The exact opposite of facebook. Students are starting to learn the need of it and parents want to be on facebook. The majority of users are college grads or of higher education with about half of the users being business decision makers which could mean a lot of things. So lets get started!
  • #34: Just like any other social network, you need to fill out all the applicable fields in order for it to complete. Once your done with that there are a lot of great features behind the scenes! There are a lot of great tools like your headline, groups answers and of course adding “friends,” excuse your business associates.
  • #35: There are 6 steps to make your profile 100% complete. 5 of them are the simple ways of just filling out all the required fields. What are you doing now, where did you go to school, a nice professional bio which is actually hard to write and something that you should spend a lot of time on. Number 6 is the killer for a lot of people as you need to proactively ask someone to write a recommendation for you. So up until this point you can only achieve 85% with each recommendation adding 5%.
  • #36: Your status just like Facebook is a great way to update your connections with relevant and thought provoking content. So right now im reaching out to my connections to vote us for college entrepreneur of the year. The headline is the blurb right under my name that is what anyone else can see if they aren’t in your network. This needs to sum yourself up in 2 sentences.
