This document describes a study that implemented an online protection and fault diagnosis technique for induction motors. The technique uses wavelet packet transform (WPT) and artificial neural networks (ANN). WPT is applied to current signals to extract features, while ANN is trained on the WPT outputs to classify faults. The method was tested on a laboratory induction motor in real-time using a LabJack device. It was able to detect and diagnose various stator faults like turn-to-turn and phase faults within a fraction of a cycle and trip the motor. The technique provides both protection and identification of fault types in induction motors.
