- 2. What is Pre-Production? • What is Pre-production? Pre-production is the phase of further developing ideas and planning prior to the process of production. In a live action movie sense it is the period before filming starts. In an animation sense it is the period before any real animating takes place. Like all great projects the success is in the planning. This section gives an overview of the different steps involved in the Pre-production process and how each step helps to develop a 'roadmap' on which to base the further production stages. • Solo Work • As I have chosen to work on my own, all the responsibility will be on me and nobody else. I will be pitching my idea to Ms Paul as I am working alone therefore I will be playing all the job roles e.g. editing, camera work, directing and producing.
- 3. Director • A director is responsible for overseeing every creative aspect of film/video, from start to finish. From the "look" of the film to trademark lighting or mood, you can recognize the best directors' films by their artistic signatures. Steven Spieldsberg Woody Allen, for example, each leave their distinctive mark on every film they make.When a director reads a script he or she develops a personal vision for how that story should be told. Whether it is a dark tale, a story of triumph, or one of passion, the director's unique vision will be responsible for presenting it in a way that no other director would. A director sees beyond the words on the page to a moving picture with specific shots, lighting, mood, nuance and emotion -- all visually created for the screen.If the initial script needs work, the director will make suggestions to the writer for improving the script. The director may also bring key crew members to the project that he has successfully worked with in the past. He will be responsible for approving each and every camera angle, lens effect, the lighting, and set design.The director also works closely with the cast, meeting before each scene to do a run through. Here he gets a feel for how the actor will play the scene. If needed, the director can provide motivational insight, or tweak performances by making suggestions. He will also listen to the suggestion of the actors.
- 4. Camera Operator • Definition and Nature of the Work • Camera operators film motion pictures, videos, television shows, and commercials. They are needed for documentary, industrial, educational, and feature productions. Camera operators who work on major feature films usually work with a crew. The director of photography, or cinematographer, heads the crew and is in charge of photography. Camera operators do the actual shooting according to the cinematographer's instructions.
- 5. Editor • Definition and Nature of the Work • Film editors are an important part of the film staff and are responsible for the technical quality of a film. Editors, with the guidance of a director, edit film until it meets with the director's approval. The director tells the film editors how to rearrange the scenes that have been shot, what footage to cut, and where to insert music, sound, or optical effects. Film editors order these special effects from specialists. Most film editors use computers or nonlinear digital editing systems to edit film. They work with copies of images called work prints to organize the scenes and transitions that make up a film. When the film is complete, the film editor will create an edit decision list, which is an outline of each shot in the film as well as its length.
