PRELIMINARY
INTERVIEW Evaluation
BRIEF
The brief for the task is to work in groups to conduct an interview about the
subject of mobile phones. The interview should then be edited into a short
film so that only the answers are used and the audience will not be able to
hear any of the questions being asked. Cutaway shots must be filmed to use
in the editing process to avoid any jump cuts. A title for the documentary will
be needed and a music bed will be used
GOOD ELEMENTS
A good element that was used during the filming of
the prelium task is that there was a variety of
interviews that have been used during the
Documentary. This is an example of an interview that
was used at the start which are called Voxpops. We
interviewed a couple of different people and asked
them one question each.
Another good element that was used during the
filming of the preliminary task was that the
graphics used were easy to read and were clear.
This is a good element during a Documentary
because the graphics are clear to the audience to
be read and they can be read quickly and with
ease.
Another good element that had been used during
the production of the preliminary task is that the
cutaways that were used are relevant and there
was lots of variety so our group did not repeat the
same cutaways. Also, the cutaways that we used
overlapped when the interviewee was speaking.
This is a good element because the cutaways are
relevant to the topic ‘Mobile phones’, they have
something to do with the topic and are not
completely random cutaways, and also having the
overlapping effect makes the documentary more
interesting, so the audience is not constantly
looking at the same thing.
PROBLEMS
A problem that occurred during the filming
of the preliminary task was that on the
main interview (Zac Walker) the
microphone is on show which makes the
documentary look unprofessional as it a
piece of equipment that has been shown
during the filming. When I start the
production for the main task I will make
sure that the microphone is hidden during
the interview before actually filming. Also,
the camera angle needed to be eye level
with the interviewee.
Another problem that occurred during the
production of documentary is that the Mise-en-
scene of the interviewees are lacking
visually interesting elements e.g. the
background as it is just a plain background
which makes the documentary look less
interesting. When I start the production work
for the main task the background should be
more creative and visually interesting which
will link to the subject that we choose to film
a documentary on.
During the cutaways in the filming process
when we used the zoom to zoom in and out
on the phone whilst the student was flicking
through a social networking site ‘twitter’, it
loses the focus as this was done too quickly
and it makes the documentary look
unprofessional as it is blurry. During the
main task the zoom should not be used, and
instead of zooming just move forward to the
object instead.
PROBLEMS
Another problem that occurred during the
editing process of the Documentary is that the
graphics during the voxpops overlapped which
made the Documentary look unprofessional and
maybe look rushed. In the main task I will try to
make sure that the graphics have enough timing
before the next one appears.
Even though the cutaways that were used
were
relevant to the topic and there was a variety,
there does need to be even more variety of
cutaways as during the process our group
had to repeat a couple of the same cutaways
as we didn't have enough of them. In the main
task the group should film as many cutaways
as possible incase they are needed.
Some other problems during the
preliminary task is that the music
was irrelevant to the subject or
topic as it had nothing to do with
mobile phones. During the main
task the group should make sure
that the music bed matches or
links into the topic of the
Documentary. The sound in the
documentary should have been
turned up a little bit louder at
the beginning of the Documentary
as the audience can’t really hear
the music behind the interviewee.
Another code and convention that
should be involved with the filming
is a voice over which will tie the
whole documentary together of
what is going on. Some
background
noise was heard during one of the
interviews which should not be
there as it makes the documentary
look unprofessional. Also, the
CONCLUSION
From the preliminary task I have learnt a lot of things. I have learnt how to use the
cameras to film a Documentary about mobile phones and I have also learnt how to use
the software Premier to edit the documentary into a short film. The main things I would
try to avoid when coming to produce the final documentary is not to use the zoom on the
cameras because it lacks focus and makes the image look blurry, and also not to use a
handheld camera if it is possible so the camera is placed on the tripod which makes it
steady and the camera then does not move. The work that I would put into practice when
coming to do the final piece is the voxpops at the start of the documentary because i
thought that this was a really good idea to give an introduction to what the documentary
was about, and also I have learnt to film more cutaways and interviews which I would
take into consideration incase anything couldn’t be used for any reason or does not fit
in with what the interviewee is saying.
