Brief
I am going to create a front cover for my school magazine at the start of my Alevel course, I will create this because it will help me regain my skills using the
editing software Adobe Photoshop CS6, other programmes such as: Microsoft
PowerPoint and Microsoft Word. I will take photos with a school camera (digital
SLR), to take pictures of my model. The task will need a medium close up shot of
my model, to put on my school magazine front cover.
Puff/Splash: ‘free
hand out’ suggests
that the students
aren’t willing to
spend their own
money on this
magazine.

Key image of white
middleclass male
student who looks
confident. This suggests
that he is passionate
about the magazine
and the
school, however his tie
is not on properly
which suggests that he
is a rebel.

Masthead of the front cover is the name
of the school. The name Chosenhill is
most likely to be a wordplay with the
schools name and also the word ‘Chosen’
this suggests that the school is the best.

Secondary stories of the
bands that are affiliated
within the school. This
suggests that the school
has a wide variety of
musicians in the school.
Main story of who is
going to be the new
head boy, this suggests
that the school is a boys
only school.
Masthead of the
magazine is the schools
title for the magazine
and also the name of the
school. The font colour
also links to the whole
cover.
Key image of
student of the
school, by her
clothing I believe
that she falls
under the
working class.

Key story of a new library
that has opened within the
school that is popular
among the students.

Strap/Sell line which is
probably the slogan of the
school.

How much do you expect a school magazine to cost?
Free?

17

£0.50-£1.00

3
How often should the school magazine be published?

Daily?

11

Weekly?

9

In conclusion of the survey I have given my peers, I have come to the understanding that they would
prefer to see sports results, they would prefer that the magazine would cost nothing, and a near split
decision whether the magazine should come out daily or weekly.

Target audience:
(age range, interests)
Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about
your audience and how to appeal to them.

16 year olds as it will be a magazine aimed for 6th form students, the type of interests that they hold are usually aimed at the music
industry, gaming industry and film industry. This is a school magazine so I will also have to incorporate academic aspects into the
magazine as well as their overall interests.

Possible title ideas:
(masthead / title block)
What is your magazine going to be called?

Main image:
What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your
work “must include a photograph of a student in a medium
close-up”

A medium close up of my model from a low angle to signify their status among their peers (how they want it more then them (good
grades).

Main cover line:
What will be the main story?

How bad do you want it?
Exclusive, how did former head boy get A*’s.

Additional key images:
What other images will be on your front cover?
Remember, it is a school magazine.

An image of the Preston Manor School logo, with an altered colour theme to match the front cover.

Additional cover lines:
Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the
magazine, these need to be audience appropriate.

Students revision techniques, advice from former pupils, advice from teachers and last of all a interview with the school head
teacher.

Typography:
(style, size, colour of copy)
Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front
page.

BIG BLOCK Black, green and white colour scheme.

The CLC of Preston Manor School, with a filter to darken it,
Background colour/image:
What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take
the focus away from the main image.

Technical considerations:
(equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting)
Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and
how you could use it.

Student ID card visible, educational atmosphere
