Preliminary Task Evaluation

        Tayla Thorley
How effective was the pre-production workflow for
              your preliminary task?
As a group, I think we worked very well as a team and allowed
each other to voice our ideas and use them within our
preliminary task. What helped us in this task is the fact that we
produced a brainstorm together to form our final idea and we
used storyboards which helped us a lot in the actual production
of the task. To make the pre-production better, I think we could
have put more detail in our storyboards so that each clip
connected better together and so that it was filmed better. What
hindered us in our pre-production was the fact one member of
our group was away one day and we didn’t have her input and
ideas into creating the storyboard.
What technology did you use to film the task and how
                  well did this go?

• We decided to use an iPad to film our preliminary task. The
benefits of using the iPad was that it was very easy to use and
wasn’t time consuming when it came to importing the video
onto the iMac. However, the downside of using the iPad is
that when you are filming, it can tend to be quite hard to hold
because it is an awkward size to film with. Because of this, it
made the filming quite wobbly at times.
What did you learn from the actual filming that you will
need to think about in the future?

• From the actual filming, I have learnt that it would be a lot
better if we filmed with a different device because the filming
came out wobbly at times. Also, in future it might be better if
we used a tripod to film with to get a sturdier hold on the
camera, therefore the filming will look more professional.
Another thing that I have learnt is that we should pick a better
location and at a different time. This is because, we chose to
film in the canteen, which tends to be quite noisy even when
it is not occupied by students. Also, because we filmed it the
wrong the way round the first time, we had to re-film it when
it was closer towards lunch time and everything had been set
up for lunch, which didn’t allow us a lot of time or space to
  film.
What technology did you use to edit your preliminary
task and how well did it go?
• To edit our preliminary task, we decided to use
iMovie. This went very well because it was very easy
to use and it gave you a lot of options to add onto
your film, like sound effects, music and transitions.
To which we used both the sound effect of a
heartbeat and a instrumental in the background of
  pieces of film.
How well does your completed preliminary task
meet the criteria set out for it?

• I think our completed preliminary task met the criteria very
well, because we had a character open a door, crossing a
room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character
and he exchanges dialogue, in which our case is a knock knock
joke. We also included match on action, shot/reverse shot and
the 180 degree rule. However, we could have included more
shot/reverse shots and some more match on action to show
the audience the character’s facial expressions and body
  language.
What do you think, overall you have learnt from the
process of completing the preliminary task?

• From the process of completing the preliminary task, I have
learnt different aspects of film. I have learnt different camera
movements like tracking shot and panning shot, that we
included a lot in our task. I have also learnt basic camera
shots, such as extreme ling shot and two shot, which again
appeared in our task several times. Also, I have learnt how to
edit a piece of film on iMovie and how to cut pieces of clip
and how to import music and sound effects and also, how to
create slow motion or make a specified clip fast-pace. I have
also, learnt how to export an edited piece of film from iMovie
  onto another external device.
