13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was
by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and
looked, and behold, a Man stood
opposite him with His sword drawn in
His hand. And Joshua went to Him and
said to Him, “Are You for us or for our
adversaries?” 14 So He said, “No, but as
Commander of the army of the LORD I
have now come.”

1 So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites
who were on the west side of the Jordan, and
all the kings of the Canaanites who were by
the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the
waters of the Jordan from before the children
of Israel until we had crossed over, that their
heart melted; and there was no spirit in them
any longer because of the children of Israel.

Joshua 4:23–24 for the LORD your God dried
up the waters of the Jordan before you until
you had crossed over, as the LORD your God
did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before
us until we had crossed over, 24 that all the
peoples of the earth may know the hand of
the LORD, that it is mighty, that you may fear
the LORD your God forever.”

Joshua 2:10–11 For we have heard how the LORD
dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when
you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the
two kings of the Amorites who were on the other
side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you
utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we heard
these things, our hearts melted; neither did there
remain any more courage in anyone because of
you, for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven
above and on earth beneath.

2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make
flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons
of Israel again the second time.”
LORD’s Command:

• Circumcision would appear to be the very worst
thing to do prior to battle. The entire army and
all the men would be in excruciating pain, in no
condition to fight.
• Circumcision was precisely what God required!
LORD’s Command:

3 So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and
circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of
the foreskins.
Joshua’s Obedience:

4 And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised
them: All the people who came out of Egypt
who were males, all the men of war, had died in
the wilderness on the way, after they had come
out of Egypt. 5 For all the people who came out
had been circumcised, but all the people born
in the wilderness, on the way as they came out
of Egypt, had not been circumcised.
The Reason:

7 Then Joshua circumcised their sons whom He
raised up in their place; for they were
uncircumcised, because they had not been
circumcised on the way.
The Reason:

8 So it was, when they had finished circumcising
all the people, that they stayed in their places in
the camp till they were healed. 9 Then the LORD
said to Joshua, “This day I have rolled away the
reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the
name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.
The Result:

‫ח‬ֶ‫ר‬ְ‫פּ‬ָ‫ה‬
(ḥěr·pāh)
A condition of shame
or disgrace that settles
in a person’s spirit,
permeating every part
of their life.

Acts 7:8 Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision;
and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the
eighth day…
Deuteronomy 10:16 Therefore circumcise the foreskin
of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.
Colossians 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with
the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the
body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of
Christ,
Romans 2:29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and
circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the
letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.
What is Circumcision?

Romans 6:12–14 Therefore do not let sin reign
in your mortal body, that you should obey it in
its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as
instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but
present yourselves to God as being alive from
the dead, and your members as instruments of
righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have
dominion over you, for you are not under law
but under grace.
Why did God choose
Circumcision?

• Physical Circumcision for Israel = national identity
with the Abrahamic Covenant.
• Spiritual Circumcision for believers (Jew &
Gentile) = identity with Messiah’s New Covenant.
Why did God choose
Circumcision?

10 Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal,
and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of
the month at twilight on the plains of Jericho.
• Crossed the Jordan – Nisan 10
• Gilgal – Nisan 14
• Ate of the “old corn” – Nisan 15
• Offering of the Wave Sheaf – Nisan 16

11 And they ate of the produce of the land on
the day after the Passover, unleavened bread
and parched grain, on the very same day. 12
Then the manna ceased on the day after they
had eaten the produce of the land; and the
children of Israel no longer had manna, but
they ate the food of the land of Canaan that
year.

13 And it came to pass, when
Joshua was by Jericho, that
he lifted his eyes and looked,
and behold, a Man stood
opposite him with His sword
drawn in His hand. And
Joshua went to Him and said
to Him, “Are You for us or for
our adversaries?”

14 So He said, “No, but as Commander of the
army of the LORD I have now come.” And
Joshua fell on his face to the earth and
worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my
Lord say to His servant?”

15 Then the Commander of the LORD’s army
said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot,
for the place where you stand is holy.” And
Joshua did so.
