Assistive Technology
Assistive technology (AT) is available to help individuals with many types of
disabilities — from cognitive problems to physical impairment.
Types of Assistive Technology:
❏ Abbreviation Expanders: allows user to create and store frequently used words or
phrases in a word processing format.
❏ Alternative keyboards: special keyboards that have overlays making it easier to type
❏ Audio books and publications
❏ Proofreading programs
❏ Speech-recognition programs: computer that works with your voice. Student simply
speaks into a microphone and words appear on a screen

But What if my School Can’t Afford it?!?
If your school is low on funding for technology, there are a few options at your disposal.
There are grants you can apply for as well as other sites and specifically designed to help
raise money for technology in the classrooms. Here are some potential resources:
Grants.gov: This site looks intimidating because of the number of grants available. However,
this number can be cut down quickly with a search and quantifiers.
Funding Factory.com: Not limited to just schools, Funding Factory is a program that you can
send in used printer and toner cartridges, as well as old cell phones in exchange for a
donation to your cause (such as new equipment for your class). Start a drive to get the
community involved, earn money for your school, and help the environment too!
But What if my School Can’t Afford it?!?
Computers Recycling Center (CRC.org): Similar to Funding Factory, one of CRC’s primary
goals is to keep old equipment out of landfills. However, they deal with larger equipment, like
old computers. They try to repair equipment before recycling it, and if successful donate to
public causes, such as schools. You can apply for a computer at their website.
Computers for Learning: CfL is a government program through the General Services
Administration that sponsors the transfer of excess computers and peripherals (i.e.
keyboards, mouse, etc.) from government agencies to schools and educational nonprofit
groups. Schools do not pay for the equipment but do have to pay the shipping and if
necessary, refurbishing. CfL operates a website where schools can register, search for and
request particular items.
