In Madagascar, a large island near Africa, there is a rear
animal called an aye -aye. The name is appropriate because it
is as strange and original as the animal itself. Some people
who live in Madagascar fear aye-ayes. They worry that aye-
ayes bring bad luck or even death.
However, there is no proof that aye-ayes are dangerous. People probably fear them
because they don’t understand them. They don’t understand them because aye-ayes
look and act in unexpected ways.
Aye-ayes are lemurs, but they resemble rats. Like rats, aye-ayes have pointy snouts
and noses as well as very sharp incisors in their mouth. Those knife like teeth help
aye-ayes to bite through tree bark so they can reach the larvae feeding within. Aye-
ayes also use those teeth to crack nuts and tough fruits like coconuts. Like rats, aye-
ayes are omnivores. They eat what's available, including plants, animals and fungi.
Because they eat tough food, both rats and aye-ayes have incisors that never stops
growing! But before anyone notices aye-ayes teeth, they will notice aye ayes ears.
Both aye-ayes and rats have big, pointed ears and stick out noticeably from their
heads. And both animals can move their ears! Can you?
If you are impressed by aye-aye’s immense, moving ears, then you will be astounded by
their middle fingers! All of the aye-aye’s fingers are long and boney. And almost all of
them ends in sharp fingernails. Aye-aye claw can be terrorizing.
But their third finger in each hand is even more unusual than the rest. It is longer. Is also
moves on it’s own! Aye-ayes use those special fingers to find and get young insects living
inside of trees. Here’s how they do it. First, they tap the tree bark. Then they listen for
larvae for moving within the tree. Next, they use their sharp teeth to tear the bark away .
When they reach the insects, they use their long, talented middle finger to
dig them out. Then they pop them into their mouths! That method of hunting is known as
echolocation. Bats, whales, dolphins and bats also use echolocation. But aye-ayes are more
closely related to humans than to other animals who use echolocation. Such as bats and
whales. Aye-ayes are uniquely suited to living in trees and finding insect within them. Aye-
ayes may be absurd, but their odd qualities and abilities make them amazing…
