RULES OF
DIVISIBILITY
FROM 2 TO 11
DIVISIBILITY BY 2
A Number is divisible by2 if the digit at
ones place s divisible by 2,ie if the digiit
at ones place is 0,2,4,6,8.
Example -
• 18÷ 2 = 9
• 22 ÷ 2 = 11
(Notice that both of these numbers are
even.)
DIVISIBILITY BY 3
A Number is divisible by 3 if the sum of
its digit is divisible by 3.
Example-
• 27 =2+7=9
9 is divisible by 3
• 12=1+2=3
3 is divisible by 3
DIVISIBILITY BY 4
A Number is divisible by 4 if the number
formed by its digit at tens and ones place s
divisible by 4.
Example-
• 456791824 and 723810
(The number made by the last two digits can
be divided by 4)
DIVISIBILITY BY 5
A Number is divisible by 5 if the digit at
ones place 0 or 5.
Example-
• 34780 /5 =6956
• 8955/5 = 1791
(Both the ones place digit is 0 and 5)
DIVISIBILITY BY 6
A Number is if its last digit is an even
number or zero and the sum of the digits is a
multiple of 3.
Example-
270 is divisible by 2 because the last digit is
0.
The sum of the digits is: 2 + 7 + 0 = 9 which
is also divisible by 3.
Therefore, 270 is divisible by 6.
DIVISIBILITY BY 7
A number is divisible by 7 if it has a
remainder of zero when divided by 7
Example -
• 672
double the last digit of the number2 is 4. 67
– 4 = 63 [Now we need to subtract it from
therest of theremaining number]
• Since 63 is divisible by 7
DIVISIBILITY BY 8
A Number is divisble by if the number
formed by the digits at hundreds, tens and
ones place is divisible by 8
Example-
• 3364280
(Separating the hundreds ,tens and ones
place)
i.e 280/8 = 35
DIVISIBILITY BY 9
A Number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its
digit is divisible by 9.
Example-
• 8826921
(8+8+2+6+9+2+1 = 36)
36/9 = 4
DIVISIBILITY BY 10
A Number s divisible by 10 if the digit at
ones place is 0.
Example-
• 10240 / 10 = 1024
• 12000 / 10 = 1200
DIVISIBILITY BY 11
A Number is divisible by 11 if the difference
between the sum of the digit at even places
and sum of the digit at odd places is either 0
or multiple of 11
Example-
• 13856722
sum of odd places = 2+7+3=17
sum of even places= 2+6+8+1=17
difference = 0
